Nature Nerds of Austin

Austin, TX

Nature Nerds of Austin
What is a **Nature Nerd** anyway? A Nature Nerd is someone who wants *field based or hands-on experiences* (e.g. hikes, citizen science, etc.), but is also interested in the *current scientific research* (i.e. astronomy, biology, ecology, physics, etc.). Anyone who wants to share what they know and what they are learning is included. **Anyone is welcome and encouraged to join regardless of skill level, ability, or location!** **Our basic expectation of behavior from everyone is "Be Considerate!'** The outdoor activities we schedule range from the Austin area, across all of Texas, and to other states. Hikes, observational activities (e.g. birding or astronomy), service/restoration/remediation projects with other groups (e.g Sierra Club), kayaking, and climbing are some examples. This includes more challenging back-country excursions with increased costs and skill requirements. **If you have an idea for an activity or would like to participate as an event leader please contact any of the organizers.** "Men and women wanted for hazardous journey. No wages, bitter cold and sweltering heat, long hours of bright darkness. Safety doubtful. Wonder certain. More of the same in the event of success." [1] We do have a basic rule that governs all activities: *No police, other LEA, firemen, EMTs, tax men, or other authority figures in a bad mood. If your event or project requires insurance, licenses, or needs to meet other regulatory requirements it is not Nature Nerds responsibility to provide them.* We also pursue deeper and more technical understandings of our interests by keeping up with the current literature (e.g. paper or book reading/reviews), as well as lectures and classes . *These activities can be in person, virtual, or hybrid (i.e. in person and virtual).* Past activities have included nature walks to identify plants and animals, going to presentations (e.g. birds, grasses, and bats), and other activities that increased our knowledge and appreciation of the natural world. We have taken trips to Commons Ford, St. Edwards Park, Breckenridge Lab, and Canyon of the Eagles. **Sharing your experiences with pictures, videos, papers, computer programs, and other media is highly encouraged and your effort is appreciated.** **Here are some links to better help explain the scope of our activities:** Basic Research -- [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basic_research](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basic_research) Hard and Soft Science -- [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_and_soft_science](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_and_soft_science) Exact Sciences -- [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exact_sciences](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exact_sciences) Citizen Science -- [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citizen_science](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citizen_science) (This used to be called 'Amateur Science' and goes back to at least 1928) The Amateur Scientist -- [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Amateur_S...](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Amateur_Scientist) Open Science -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_science Backcountry vs. Frontcountry -- [https://www.trailspace.com/blog/2010/07/06/backcountry-versus-frontcountry.html](https://www.trailspace.com/blog/2010/07/06/backcountry-versus-frontcountry.html) Wilderness Medical Emergency -- [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilderness_medical_emergency](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilderness_medical_emergency) **(Please seriously consider taking the time and effort to get CPR and WFA training.)** Leave No Trace -- [https://lnt.org/](https://lnt.org/) The 10 Essentials -- [https://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/ten-essentials.html](https://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/ten-essentials.html) (Be sure to select the Expert Advise menu page for more outdoor information!) Low wages, bitter cold, long hours of complete darkness. Safe return doubtful. Honour and recognition in event of success." The irony is it appears that the quote was [fabricated many years after the actual event](http://www.antarctic-circle.org/advert.htm) and is nothing more than urban legend.

Austin Breathwork with friends

Cedar Park, TX

Austin Breathwork with friends
Welcome to Austin Breathwork with Friends! A laid back group of humans sharing space, doing some breathwork, and building community. If you are curious about breathwork and want to give it a try in a low pressure environment, or if you’ve been seeking a community aspect to add to your practice, you’ve come to the right place. We meet to share a mindful, present, and meditative space with each other. We will try to hold our sessions outside, at the end of each month as much as possible. It feels so good to get fresh air and sunshine! **How it works:** * **Community sharing and grounding** \- I facilitate a quick grounding exercise\, and we open with some sharing\. * **Breathing** \- Together we enjoy a Breathwork journey \(led by intuition\, each session varies and has a different theme\)\. * **Journaling & community sharing** \- After the breathwork session\, we take a moment to journal\, and space is created for any sharing desired\. * **(Optional) Post outdoor activities -** Activities such as hiking, movement/yoga, additional journaling, jam sessions, dancing, etc. are encouraged after :) **Intention:** The intention is to share a beautiful mindfulness practice with other mindful beings, to share space, and build friends and community in the process. **Additional things to know:** * All levels of experience are welcome. * This is a donation based group. If you feel compelled to support that is deeply appreciated, though there is zero pressure. * We are open to all backgrounds, beliefs, and gather as fellow humans sharing this amazing time together. * We encourage you to bring a physical journal. * Bring a mat and/or meditation cushion to sit and/or lie on. * Please wear clothing that keeps you and those around you comfortable. * If you are attending an outdoor event, please check the weather and bring anything you might need to be most comfortable. —> Your meat suit’s safety and well-being, is important to us, and is your full responsibility. I am a very creative person with many creative hobbies such as drawing and percussion. I'm passionate about both the world of business and spirituality. I started this group because I love sharing things that are blessing my life. Breathwork is one of those tools, it has transformed my life. I have had incredibly profound experiences through breathwork, and hope to share that with others (you). I also know we all seek more intentional communities, I know I do. Together, I believe we will create something beautiful. I can't wait to meet you! Want to learn more? Find me on [Instagram](https://linke.to/KzZ2). **Safety Notice:** By attending our events, you acknowledge and consent to being aware of the risks of participating in activities (indoor or outdoor) such as breathwork, yoga, hiking, and any other activity listed or unlisted. These breathing exercises are a guide only, you should always listen to your body and never push yourself. Never practice breathing exercises before or during driving, swimming, bathing, or in any other circumstance where the loss of consciousness could result in physical injury. These breathing techniques may cause tingling sensations, ringing in the ears, and/or dizziness. If you faint, however, you have gone too far and should take it more slowly next time.

Austin Mountaineers

Cedar Park, TX

Austin Mountaineers
Who Are We? The Austin Mountaineers. Sounds like a joke right? I thought the same thing and then I spent the next summer climbing 14ers in Colorado with some the coolest people I have ever met. I made a lot of great memories and some life long friends. So who are we? Truth be told we might bit off and enjoy type 2 fun a bit much. We are of the type of people who like a challenge and look for the out of the way adventures. We are a kooky bunch from many different backgrounds who enjoy the misery of the challenge and the thrill of over coming the odds. Sometimes we ask ourselves why we climb these mountains. The answer always is "because it's there" and "because its difficult". What do We do? Our main focus is trying to hike all of the 14ers in Colorado mostly but in other parts of the US as well. Sprinkle in some random peak bagging, state high points, bucket list backpacking trips, and endless training to be in the best shape we can be in to tackle the challenges. The high season is in the summer when the peaks are free of snow. That's July, August and September mostly. The rest of the time we hike where we can. This group is not for the most part a casual hiking group. We try for the big stuff and hike the big miles when we can. We do have several introductory hikes that ease people into things and do our best to help people prep for the big stuff. The end goal is to push ourselves to take on the big dreams. We welcome anyone and everyone and would love to hear how you are dreaming big. If it's the tallest peaks in the world or the tallest peaks in your neighborhood we'd love to help you achieve that if we can. Even if it's just a training partner to sweat with while you train. We each add something to the equation and help push each other farther. It will be hard but it will be worth it. :D Members of this Meetup are also welcome to join our Facebook group at: https://facebook.com/groups/500414020862822?group_view_ref See you at the top my friend. \-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\- Group Rules: We will not accept any new member that does not have an actual photo of themselves as their Meetup profile picture. For safety reasons, we hike together and support each-other as a group, with the leader in control. We hike, climb, rest and eat together. No one will be allowed to hike ahead at any time. This has caused major issues with events in the past. If you are unwilling to comply with this - please do not sign up. Austin Mountaineer event leaders RESERVE the RIGHT to REMOVE any one from an event if that becomes necessary. The safety of all members at our events is our paramount concern. All of the Austin Mountaineer leaders are volunteers and are not compensated for any activity. If the event is a strenuous or difficult one, you may be asked about your hiking history and your abilities. This is not only to protect you but the other hikers at the event. YOUR PARTICIPATION IN AN EVENT IS AT THE DISCRETION OF THE EVENT LEADER. Participants should be in good physical condition to attend any event. Folks with an underlying medical condition should avoid moderate and strenuous events. If you are feeling sick for any reason, please stay home. RELEASE OF LIABILITY THAT ALL EVENT PARTICIPANTS MUST AGREE TO: I understand that during my participation in any Austin Mountaineers event, I may be exposed to a variety of hazards and risks, foreseen or unforeseen, which are inherent in outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, and climbing. These inherent risks include, but are not limited to, the dangers of serious bodily injury, property damage, and death from exposure to the hazards during the event and during travel prior to and after the event. I understand that injuries and damages can occur by natural causes or activities of other persons, trip members, and the trip leader. I further understand that on this or any Austin Mountaineers event there may not be rescue or medical facilities or expertise necessary to deal with the injuries and damages to which I may be exposed. Participation in any Austin Mountaineers event is completely at your own risk. When joining one of our overnight/remote events, you will need to provide your mobile number, email address and emergency contact information to the event leader(s). This information may be shared with other participants on a contact sheet to streamline communication for the event. A deposit or full payment, and more information may be needed for some trips. Smoking is not allowed on our events. Check with the event leader to see if pets are allowed for that specific event.
