Silver Spring Outdoors

This meetup is for people in the Silver Spring area who enjoy being outdoors and want to meet and socialize with other area residents. We plan outdoor activities of short duration (typically <3 hours) and within an hour drive of Silver Spring. While the group may host any outdoor activity most of our events involve walking or hiking about four miles. We often walk on the stream valley trails that form a network in and around Silver Spring. In the winter, weeknight walks are more often in neighborhoods where there are streetlights. Members are encouraged to suggest and organize outdoor events. It is helpful if you can post a photo of yourself on your profile (even better if it is outdoors). Dues for this meet-up are $5 per year. Any member who hosts a meet-up event will automatically be exempt from dues for the calendar year. New members have a free trial of 2 months before paying dues. Members who are inactive for more than two months and have not paid dues may be dropped. Dues are paid in cash to the organizer to avoid processing fees which are high. The dues go to pay the Meetup fee for hosting the website which is currently $209.78 per year. Some rules/guidelines: Anyone over 18 can join. Children are welcome as a guest of a member as long as they are supervised and can keep up with the described activity. Dogs are welcome as long as they are friendly, leashed, you pick up after them and they are allowed in the area where we will be. If you have any questions about an event after reading the description, please message the event organizer privately or post a comment. No Show policy: You are a no show if you have signed up to attend an event (RSVP'd yes) and do not attend. If you change your RSVP at the last minute and give no reason that will be counted as a no show. If a member shows a pattern of signing up for events then not attending they may be dropped from the group since their RSVPs are preventing others from participating. In most cases members will be dropped from the group after two no shows.

Washington Women Outdoors (WWO) is a non-profit organization founded in the Fall of 1977 and recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) in the Spring of 1979, that is run almost entirely by volunteers. We engage in outdoor activities in the Washington, DC area where women share skills, experience, strengths, and support to enhance and expand each woman's world. We welcome women of diverse ages, races, and lifestyles. WWO provides instruction by women for women. Activities are available for all skill levels to inspire the beginner and to challenge the more advanced.

WWO members are independent women who seek adventure in the outdoors. We have a passion for hiking, biking, rock climbing, caving, backpacking, kayaking, cross country skiing, horseback riding, hang gliding, and anything that tests our strength and broadens our horizons. We enjoy meeting new people who want to travel with us to beautiful places in the wilderness. If you are open to learning new things in a supportive environment and enjoy sharing the outdoors with other women, we invite you to join us.

WWO is different than typical Meetup groups. We scout our hiking and biking trips. Each trip is led by two leaders. One leader stays at the front of the group and the second leader is the sweep. Each participant is encouraged to participate at her own pace, and the sweep is there to ensure that no one is left behind. We want each participant to go at their own pace so that they enjoy their experience and come back to the outdoors.

Leesburg Tennis Outdoors Meetup

The RJ TENNIS BOOT CAMP® adult tennis program is for all levels of play: Beginners to the 5.0 USTA player. When I was first getting into tennis as an adult I didn't know of all the options that were available for me to play tennis. As for tennis during the winter and rainy spring months, I thought indoor tennis was out of the question. I didn't know that you didn't have to join a club to be able to participate in any of the tennis clinics. Back when smoke signals was the form of communication from one location to another, I didn't know of all the great opportunities to play tennis at various locations. MEETUP is a great way for tennis players of all abilities to find opportunities to play. There are great MEETUP clubs on this platform.

If you have been looking for a place to play some invigorating tennis and to work on growing your tennis game, may I encourage you to give the RJ TENNIS BOOT CAMP® adult tennis program a try. Membership is not required to participate in any of the drop in clinics. There are member/non-member clinic fees to participate in all of the RJT clinics.

If you have never done the RJT class before or if it has been sometime since you have done the class, please ask to get onto the RJT emailing list so that you can keep up to date with the schedule of classes. Would you like to be sitting in traffic on Rt. 28 at 5 pm? Or... what about having a great outdoor workout, fun in the sun, with like-minded folks just like you! Let's get some cardio, some laughs, decrease stress and maybe drop a few pounds along the way! As a bonus, the rush hour traffic slowly fades away, and you can jump in your car with your shorts and T-shirt on, and buzz home with no traffic! Howbout that? This meetup is for people wanting to exercise with a group, after work, outside, during the afternoon rush hour, and at no cost. This is not a business. The organizer is the same as you. The group is led initially by the organizer, but the thinking is we have many talented folks who may want to lead exercises or boot-camp style games. The idea is to have fun and feel that you are actually taking care of your body and mind, and helping others do the same. We meet in free public spaces, parks, etc. that are very close to work and on the way home. All ages and abilities are welcomed, as you will be accommodated to your comfort zone. Example: Someone has a shoulder problem and avoids exercises that focus on the shoulder, but they can do a different exercise instead. Hello! This is a group for Shelties (aka Shetland Sheepdogs) and their crazy humans. Each month we will investigate a new dog-friendly place around Northern Virginia or a bordering area. We plan to take our humans on MANY adventures: from wineries and breweries, to beautiful hikes, to the best local dog parks and park parks.

We will start with meetups in the Ashburn and Leesburg VA area (as that is our home base). But we plan to range westward to Purcellville and Bluemont for hikes, farms, and breweries and southward to Virginia wine country such as Delaplane. We may also venture closer to the district because of the beautiful parks and dog-friendly facilities in Alexandria, Arlington, etc. Meetup suggestions welcome!

*COVID Update* - Current status: once per month socially distanced meets, all outside. Group co-founders/leaders Laura & Chris are back organizing events now that they have their shot(s). Co-organizer Nancy Penn continues to graciously create the occasional meetup. Other members are more than welcome to come forward with meetups to host -just shoot us a message. Your own local dog park (especially if it has a "small-dog" section) is a great venue for this.
