SOUTHWEST CLIMBING AND BOULDERING

Tempe, AZ

SOUTHWEST CLIMBING AND BOULDERING

Southwest Climbers and Boulderers, affectionately known as "SCAB's"...

Welcome Rock Climbers!

This Meetup group is geared toward building a strong and fun climbing community in the Valley of the Sun.  Arizona has so much rock climbing to offer.  You can literally  drive in any direction from Phoenix and find a climbing crag.  Phoenix Metro also has 6 rock climbing gyms which have created a steady influx of new climbers and has allowed climbers to train and progress in a safe environment.  If you got bit by the rock climbing bug, Arizona is a good place to be.

• Who are we?

The SCAB group was created in 2012 by our friend Joe Cayer with the idea that sharing our passion for climbing often leads to good things.  Many in this group have forged great friendships and have shared  amazing outdoor adventures together.

We are based in the Phoenix Metro East Valley.  Our organizers have many years of experience both climbing and hosting meetups (trust me it's an art).  The SCAB members range from new climbers, to gym climbers, to experienced trad climbers, to weekend sport climbers, to boulderers of every level.

• What do we do?

SCAB meets weekly at the Phoenix Rock Gym in Tempe on Tuesday and Thursday nights for some gym climbing.  Our organizers and hosts also schedule additional gym climbs based on their availability (like Friday Night Focus if you like bouldering).  And of course, we climb outdoors!  Our outdoors schedule heavily depends on the season, weather, and organizers' availability.  That said, we try to host 1 or 2 outdoor trips a month.  We mostly organize Sport Climbing trips and bouldering trips all over the state (Queen Creek Canyon, Flagstaff, Mt Lemmon, Cochise, Winslow, etc...).  We are often involved in the local climbing events such as the main climbing competitions and festival (check out our QCBC pictures!).

• What do you get if you join?

Joining SCAB is totally free to all our members (though we welcome donations that go toward group gear like ropes, and toward the Meetup fees).  We offer an opportunity to join a friendly and laid back climbing community where you'll always have a climbing partner.  For those who are new to climbing, SCAB is a place where you can find encouraging climbers to help you learn the ropes.  You'll get access to our calendar and meetups. And you get to climb with us!!!

Lastly, we need to add this, because it's true and you need to know:

**Disclaimer of Liability**
CLIMBING IS A DANGEROUS SPORT!

Involvement in rock climbing carries a significant risk of personal injury or death. CLIMB AT YOUR OWN RISK! SCAB organizers are not responsible for your safety.  Organizers do their best to maintain a safe environment during meetups, and members that don't comply with safety guidelines will be removed.  That said, climbing has dangers inherent to the sport and the environment (risk of falls, falling rocks, weather hazards, equipment failures, etc...).  Remember, you are climbing at your OWN RISK!

Southern Arizona Mushroom Growing Ninjas (Phoenix Chapter)

Tempe, AZ

Southern Arizona Mushroom Growing Ninjas (Phoenix Chapter)
If you are interested in mushroom cultivation, whether a novice or experienced, you've found your group. Our members are growing mushrooms at home. We are here for the community as well as for our members. Don't have a background in science? No problem! It's a pretty easy hobby once you begin. You may very well find member's mushrooms for sale at farmer's markets and around town. Come and join us to learn mushroom cultivation of all kinds, and perhaps join us on an occasional wild mushroom foray into the mountains after the summer monsoon rains. I'd like to set up a small cooperative lab to store and expand mushroom cultures that our group members could grow out, year round. Don't worry if you're inexperienced, it's not all that difficult to begin. I've had great success growing mushrooms here in the desert. Think mushroom production and deserts don't go together? It's one of the most water efficient crops around! In fact, it's probably the most water efficient crop found growing in a desert climate. We will occasionally include some fermented food production classes covering traditionals such as kimchi, sauerkraut, kombucha etc.. We'll also have some invited speakers come and present, and we'll mess around with an occasional lab and class on bacteria, and even bacterial art. Our goal is to have you producing all these foods at home using low tech and very affordable methods. You'll find beginners and seasoned growers at our meetings, and yes, even the occasional mushroom growing ninja. It's a low stress and very relaxing hobby that could easily be turned into a commercial business, if one desired. We began in Tucson, and now were coming for you Phoenix to spread the spores of mushroom cultivation!
