The 5 to 9ers (20s and 30s)

Columbia, MD

The 5 to 9ers (20s and 30s)

-You already have your 9 to 5 life, now it's time for your 5 to 9 life! Join the 5 to 9ers in our welcoming group for young adults in their early 20s/30s.

-Membership is currently closed as attendance demand is higher than event supply.

----Our mission statement----

America's tagline seems to be work, work, work. Where's the play? Where's the life outside of work? Young adults especially seem to have an explosion of social life in college and then afterwards seem to struggle to maintain anything close to it. That doesn't have to be the case. You can still have fun. You can still have a social life with many friends.

I'm a young adult professional who's fed up with the overworked culture. Don't get me wrong, I love to roll up my sleeves and work hard. But I don't think that's what life is all about. I think life is about the memories. The relationships. The nights of laughter.

So many seem to be working to just survive. Why not thrive? Why not have something to look forward to every week? Social gatherings, hiking, dancing, games, sports - the sky is the limit! Organize impromptu gatherings with your new friends on our GroupMe chat or just see what everyone is up to.

Just imagine. A social community. A fun community. An uplifting, supporting, encouraging community! I know there are many like-minded young professionals also craving this in their life. Or maybe craving more of it. If what I said resonated with you, then this group is for you.

The Fearless and Fabulous

Columbia, MD

The Fearless and Fabulous
Fearless, fierce and fabulous females fueled by passion seeking broader horizons, empowerment, strong relationships, health and healing, and social and political engagement to bring personal growth to unchartered heights all in the name of fun social, physical and entertaining activities. We created this group exclusively for women looking to explore depths of their personalities in cultivating new hobbies and uncovering passions to try new activities and step outside comfort zones all while creating solid friendships built on mutual respect and support. There will be a little bit of everything in this group from outdoor activities like hiking, biking, kayaking, festivals, travel to indoorsy stuff like painting, yoga, trying new restaurants, book clubs, movie nights, volunteering within the community (food/toy drives, soup kitchens, etc.), canvassing, political campaigns, brunch clubs to old fashioned tried and true potlucks and dancing! There will be dancing. We hope you come here looking for a fun night out but end up finding a lifetime’s worth of so much more. Please make suggestions. This is your group and it will be what you make it. Check out our official group instagram page @thefearlessandfabulous and follow our hashtag #thefearlessandfabulous . ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• With that being said, we do have some ground rules to enforce. Meetup events take a lot of time to plan and execute and we want to be clear that joining the group means abiding by the rules and committing to joining in events as time allows. 1.) Treat all members with respect. We will be engaging in some discussions with political context and while debates/lively discussions are encouraged, disrespectful behaviors/drama will not be tolerated. 2.) Join to be present and attend events. There are no sidelines in this meetup. We are shooting for quality members not quantity. Be prepared to join, attend, plan and lead activities as well. The group’s impact and success is dependent on your action. Members inactive for six months will be removed. 3.) No Show Policy: Accumulating (2) no-shows within a six month timeframe will result in removal from the group. What is a no-show? Changing your RSVP to ‘no’ within 24HRs of the RSVPs closing and/or simply not showing up to an event. 4.) Habitual RSVPers that always cancel will not be tolerated. Please RSVP to events you want to attend and follow through. This is a very noticeable pattern and unfortunately takes opportunities away from other members. 5.) Communication is key. If you cannot make events, let hosts know in advance. We understand things happen but if a pattern emerges, you may be removed from the group. 6.) Where payments are concerned for group events: If you pay for an event and cancel, if we've paid in advance we may not be able to work out a refund for you. If you pre-pay for a group outing and the establishment cancels the event and the company doesnt offer us a refund, we will not be able to offer refunds. Please make sure to understand that if booking is required in advance, refunds may not be possible. 7.) Removal from the group will be based on no shows, rude behavior, and/or inactive member status.

Co-Ed Safer Soccer

Silver Spring, MD

Co-Ed Safer Soccer
This is the safer soccer subgroup of the regular [Washington, DC Pick-up Soccer](http://www.meetup.com/dcsoccer/) group.  This subgroup is used to communicate about the safer soccer lighter ball games.  All members subscribed to organizer messages will receive a weekly email from an organizer (usually Jason Taylor) about safer soccer. However, anyone is welcome to view the past \~10 years of emails archived [here](http://www.meetup.com/safersoccer/boards/thread/23643732/140/).  If you are rsvping for a game, you need to be subscribed to organizer messages, since [those messages may contain information about last-minute changes](https://www.meetup.com/safersoccer/messages/boards/thread/51295430). All games in this subgroup use a special full-sized very light ball. We play in Silver Spring, Maryland, north of the beltway by about 5 minutes. No soccer experience is required, but do not join if you are injured. **NON-FIFA RULES:** ● Light ball. The ball we use is \~1/8th as heavy as a regulation ball.  It is the same size. It is harder to pass and dribble, especially in hot weather. Also, it doesn't feel the same as a 5.  If you are an older soccer player, it takes a game to get used to.  (We once played against a very good soccer team.  We beat them partly because they were not used to our ball. ) So, why do we use this ball? It prevents pain, but the main reason is because of a link between non-concussive heading and growth of a protein called tau. Tau probably strengthens brain tissue, which is good, and probably why this occurs, but in doing so there is probably a permanent loss of [mental ability](https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1169/1114002952_88e5644be1.jpg).  If you'd like to know more about this, you can read here: [http://healthland.time.com/2012/11/13/study...](http://healthland.time.com/2012/11/13/study-soccer-players-without-concussions-still-have-brain-changes) [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chronic_trauma...](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chronic_traumatic_encephalopathy) [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tau_protein](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tau_protein) [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SltxL7VbooA](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SltxL7VbooA) (2 minutes) [http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/lea...](http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/league-of-denial) minutes 1:24-1:29 (6 minutes) **To join the group you are required to read [this](http://www.meetup.com/safersoccer/messages/boards/thread/49667759/0/#129018573)**.  If you say "OK, good to know.  No problem, I just won't head," realize that your reaction time is [~215 ms](http://www.humanbenchmark.com/tests/reactiontime) but it takes only \~[60 ms](https://www.google.ca/search?q=9+ft+%2F+100+mph) for a ball to hit you.  So all soccer players get hit in the head by the ball occasionally.  For reasons we can't discuss here, be skeptical of what you read about this topic. (Heck, be skeptical of everything!)  But for similar reasons, you are either for our group, or you are against our group (and, by default, for the majority/status quo). If you don't care at all about head injuries in the sports you play, you are not welcome here.  There are about 300 other soccer games in the DC area that you should play at instead. ● Injury-based foul system\*\*.\*\*  The ref does not care if you were going for the ball or if it was intentional or not. If you end up injuring anyone, even your own teammate, you will get a yellow card and will have to sit out for 2 minutes. Do it a few times and expect a red card and a ban.  This way it is to your advantage to look first.  Knowing where nearby players are increases safety.  Hands are always allowed to protect yourself from anything, but not if it was for an advantage. ● **Next point wins.** The traditional method of re-balancing lopsided teams is to have the best player on the senior team switch players with the worse player on the junior team. This is horrible for several reasons. It makes the worst player, usually a woman, feel horrible. We may as well make her wear the scarlet letter. It also means all the points the great player just got now count against him. It confuses people like me because the teams just got spaghetied up. Imagine watching the super bowl and having the quarterback switch sides at halftime. It's stupid. Indeed, there's no teams at all if the teams changed, IMO. So what we do to make the game fun all the way to the end is different. Let's call the “senior” team that with the most point. If they have 2 or more points more than the "junior" team when there are 10 minutes left, the “next point wins” rule may begin in which: If someone scores, their team wins. If nobody scores, the senior team wins. If you are on the senior team you may wish to play keep away to run out the clock. The captain of the senior team can contest “next point wins” by trying to pick a coin toss. If he/she gets it correct (50% chance), the game is played out normally. All American football players new to soccer are encouraged to view [this educational video](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KeG_i8CWE8) before playing. ● No out of bounds. This makes it more interesting and easier to ref. ● No offsides. ● No goalies for the senior team. (The senior team is the one that is ahead in points.) This rule is used in place of an offsides rule, since it implies you cannot win by sticking some fat player who stands in front of their relatively small Pugg goal all day long. ● Goal resizing. Sometimes a strong player comes on mid-game after teams were picked by the two captains. If someone like Ronaldo joins a team and/or both captains agree to goal resizing to make the game more balanced the game will be stopped and the goal sizes altered to make it more even. This rule should be invoked quickly once an imbalance is suspected, if at all, not when it is too late or just before the 10-minute warning when next point wins can solve the problem a different way.
