This group is about YOU guys-whatever you want to do, I'm here to make it happen and connect you with other people who enjoy the same! **[Frequently Asked Questions](https://www.meetup.com/YnFnMoCo/pages/28018382/FAQ/)** **Q: Wasn't this group called "xxx"?** A: This group was founded back in 2013. Apparently, it has had different names over the years. The previous name I do know of was "Friends in the Burbs." The current staff changed its name in 2016 when they took over. **Q: Why don't you do meetups in "xxx" anymore?** A: As this is a group staffed by volunteers, we have a revolving roster of hosts. Sometimes we get too busy with work or life. If you'd like to step up and host some events, let us know. For instance, we used to have meetups in Freehold every week. That would be cool if we do them again. **Q: Doesn't meetup cost money? Do I need to pay any dues?** A: Yes and no. Essentially, it costs $15 a month to keep the group open. But some Organizers opt to absorb the costs for you. This is one of those groups. However, there is a that little button on the side which allows you to make a donation. Or you can buy the Organizer a drink the next time you see him. **Q: Is this a group for singles only?**  A: No. Many of the members of this group are in relationships (sometimes with other group members). Couples are always welcome! **Q: Why is there an age limit for this group?** A: When this group got established, there was a dearth of groups which catered to the 20s-30s community. However, there was a plethora of groups which events have members in their late 40s and beyond. I had to set a limit somewhere and that is 1970. While I've made exceptions in the past, this is few and far between. **Q: Why do I see the same event posted in multiple groups.** A: There are several reasons for this: > 1\. The event host happens to be a host in multiple groups and would like to bring different groups of people together for the mutual goal of having fun and making friends\. For instance\, there might be an event posted in this group which may be posted in another group which tends to attract an older crowd or it may be posted in another group which members mostly live outside of the area or it may be posted in another group which focuses on a particular subject matter\. > 2\. The hosts in this group are also good friends with the hosts in another group \(as we both share the same goals of having a good time\)\. There is no "us vs them" mentality\. In addition\, by commingling events\, there are hopes that the members of one group get to know the members of another group and maybe join that other group\. > 3\. The event is a publicly hosted event\. Meaning that unlike\, say\, a dinner party or a bar night organized by a meetup group\, the REAL organizers of the event are those off meetup\, such as local businesses or organizations\. We try to highlight events offered by the community when possible\, like wine tastings\, bonfires\, festivals\, etc\. Our free advertisement and attendance is our way to let them know that we appreciate what they're doing\. As far as the other groups who posted it the proper etiquette is that the host in one group first gets permission from the host of the event in the other group to crosspost\. This of course does not apply if the other group isn't targeted towards the same demographic\. Just note that if you do see an event like this\, the host who posted it will be there\. **Q: Can I be an event host?** A: Yes. We're always looking to expand our staff! But please note the following rules: > 1\. Please come to some of the other meetups\. This will help the members of the group get to know you and get interested in your events\. > 2\. Please keep in mind what I wrote above with regards to multi\-group postings\. That's fine if you're working with another group's host\, but please don't post up for someone else's happy hour without their permission\. > 3\. Please don't post a meetup which competes with another already posted meetup\. For instance\, if a meetup has been posted for Bar A\, please don't post a meetup at the same time for Watermark\. However\, exceptions are acceptable if the activity varies\. For instance\, a meetup for a hike is allowed to occur the same time as a meetup for a movie night\, since those are two separate types of activities\.  > 4\. If you run an organization in which you have to pay dues\, you cannot post an event in this group in which you have to be a member of your organization\. **Q: I run "yyy" group. Would you mind if I post your event in my group? Or would you mind if I post my event in your group?** A: We try to co-mingle with the other meetup groups. It's great to bring people together. That being said there are few cases where we might be apprehensive of such collaborations, mainly if your group has a religious or political bias. The idea here is inclusion! Granted, as I mentioned earlier, if there was a publicly hosted event, and your group decides to post for it after this group does, that's your prerogative. It's just that the goal of this group is not to inflict a bias. **Q: I have a problem with "so and so".**  A: Please talk to one of the hosts or organizers. Harassment will not be tolerated. This is important. We have a female Assistant Organizer if you're not comfortable talking to the Organizer or the male Assistant Organizer. If you don't feel comfortable talking to either of us, I've made an account for people to reach out anonymously if they feel they're being harassed, but don't want to reveal their identity. [https://ynfnmoco.sarahah.com/](https://ynfnmoco.sarahah.com/) **Disclaimer** The hosts and organizers of this group are not responsible for any injuries or behavior of any members. You are ultimately attending all events at your own risk and responsibility. Any issues should immediately be reported to the organizers of the group in a private e-mail or message. Please drink responsibly and do not drive while intoxicated.

Wing Chun is one of the best self defense martial arts in the world. It is known for it's efficiency and effectiveness. Wing Chun is not a competitive sport, as it's principles are geared entirely for combat. Please come on in and try this wonderful martial art for yourself!

Our address is: 330 Neptune Ave. Brooklyn, NY 11235

We meet every Tuesday and Thursday at 7 PM - 9 PM.

Sunday classes are from 5 PM -  7 PM.

The classes are free for two months if you mention Meetup.

Please checkout our past Meetup pictures, or take a look and like our Facebook page!

Foundation of Wing Chun:

According to Grand Master Yip Man, Wing Chun was developed by Ng Mui, who was Abbess at the Henan Shaolin Monastery and managed to survive its destruction by Qing forces during the reign of the Kangxi Emperor (1662–1722). She fled to the White Crane Temple (somewhere in the Daliang mountains between Yunnan and Sichuan), where she met a girl of fifteen named Yim Wing-Chun whom a bandit was trying to force into marriage. Ng Mui taught Wing-Chun how to defend herself by distilling Shaolin martial art knowledge into a system that Wing-Chun could learn quickly and use without developing great strength.

To see what Wing Chun Kung Fu actually looks like in action, please do a YouTube search for IP Man.

Prospect Park Soccer (Mixed-Level)

Brooklyn, NY

Prospect Park Soccer (Mixed-Level)
BEFORE YOU APPLY, please read instructions below (click “read more”). Keep in mind that if you are looking for a typical pick-up soccer game, this group is likely **not** for you. We meet in or near Prospect Park, Brooklyn, and have been playing soccer since the summer of 2006, outside and inside, year-round. We host pick up games and leagues that are friendly and fun for players of all skill levels and genders. **Our players are mostly...** * people who are learning how to play soccer, *including complete beginners who have never touched a soccer ball in their lives* * people who have played soccer but would like to avoid injury and aggressive players * people who have not always felt comfortable in the mainstream sports world, including women, non-binary, and trans players *Advanced players of all genders are welcome to play with us if you are looking for a mellow but competitive game and are able to adjust the way you might normally play.* Once you join the group, you will see all of the game dates and locations and can RSVP to them (required). Please read our GUIDELINES FOR PLAY (below) before coming to a game. We take them very seriously since they keep this group different from most soccer groups out there. **HOW TO JOIN THIS GROUP** FIRST, read about us (below) very carefully to make sure this is the group for you. THEN, click the "join us" button and fill out all of the profile questions: * Use a CLOSE UP, RECOGNIZABLE picture of your face, with NO ONE ELSE in it * Introduce yourself for real - don't just say "hi" * Use your real first name - no screen/nicknames or initials **ABOUT THE GAMES** Most of our games are open to all genders and skill levels, but a few are limited to sub-groups of players. We have players of all ages, from 18 to over 70. The **pickup games** are usually outdoors. There are no set teams, tryouts, or goalies and we rotate positions. There is no need to commit to coming every week, and there are always new people. Pickup games are two hours long and latecomers may not join. We usually play three, 7v7 games on a quarter sized field with two short breaks. We try to do throw-ins and corner kicks, but no off-sides, penalty kicks, etc. We don't really keep score and we will shuffle players around if teams are too uneven skill-wise. The **league games** have set teams and goalies and follow more standard soccer rules. They are usually on a weeknight and are outdoors or indoors, depending on the season. Registration is posted about two weeks before each season. **GUIDELINES** Most of our games include players with with a wide range of skill levels. Here are some things to keep in mind: **Pass often.** Way more than you might usually. Do not carry the ball for more than a few steps. Pass to the forwards and let them score. Do not shoot from the midline or behind it. **Avoid physical contact.** Stay very spread out on the field. This is an easy, passing game intended to build skill and confidence. If someone has the ball, you can contain them, but give them lots of space. No one should ever end up on the ground. This is a great indicator that the pace of the game is too fast. **Keep the balls low.** Keep your feet below waist level. Make only easy, low shots on the goal. **Play your position.** If you are playing left or right, do not come into the middle. If you are on defense, stay behind the midline. If you are forward, stay up near the goal rather than coming back to dribble the ball forward. If you are on midfield, stay out of both goal zones entirely - let the offense and defense handle things there. **Play defense but don't stand in the goal.** We don't have goalies and use small, pop up goals. We don't use hands, and we try to limit the amount of people in the goal zone to 2 people from each team at any one time. **Let the less skilled players try to hold their own.** Don't try to "help" them or play their position. Pass to them even if they miss your passes every time. Give them room when they have the ball. Don't run at them, stick your feet out, or aggressively block them. Let them dribble a bit or try out some moves. **Rotate the positions a few times during the game to give people a chance to try different things**. The beginners should not get stuck on defense for the whole game, and if there are advanced players who keep shooting on the goal, they should be moved to defense. **Above all, please slow down and keep your energy mellow and non-agressive,** even if you are playing against other, equally skilled players, Some people want to run a lot or can get really intense when they play, but this is really not the game for it. We have small fields and learning players. **WHAT TO WEAR** Shin guards are highly recommended for all of our games. Even though our games are slower, things happen. We recommend TURF soccer shoes (not tennis shoes, flat soccer shoes or cleats) for all of our games on the turf. Cleats tear up grass fields and get stuck in turf fields - plus they injure people more easily. Flat shoes slide on both turf and grass when it is wet. If you don't have shin guards or turf shoes, just come anyway. It doesn't matter and you can get that stuff later. Please do not wear watches, large jewelry, necklaces, or earrings that could catch on anything. We have vests/pinnies, so there is no need to bring a white and dark shirt to designate teams unless it is specified in the event description. **WHAT TO BRING** We have all the gear. Just bring a water bottle. If you have a soccer ball, bring it if you can - we have a pump. **WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU ARRIVE** When you arrive, introduce yourself to whoever is hosting and be sure to sign in right away so you don't get counted as a no show (two no-shows and you won't be able to play for the rest of the season.) **LEVELS** For some games, we split up by level, and other games are limited to certain levels. 1 = You have not played much or at all, 2 = You have played before, but are still learning or find it difficult to run for a full game 3 = You have basics totally down, have played regularly for more than three years, and can run fast for a full game, 4 = You have solid skills and have played for more than ten years or played growing up, 5 = You are an advanced player and have played high level games in school or leagues. See you out there!
