Autistic in NYC: Queens groups

South Richmond Hill, NY

Autistic in NYC: Queens groups
This Meetup group is shared by seven overlapping autistic peer-led groups of autistic adults (18+). Each group is led or facilitated by members of the Autistic Peer Leadership Group (ApLEG). Each month (except December and the summer months) we will usually hold one in-person gathering (usually at a relatively quiet diner). Each month we also hold eight online text-based chat meetings. Our online chat meetings include two chats per month for the [Queens Discussion Group](http://autisticnyc.org/queens/) (our main support group) and one chat per month for each of six other groups, including the [Autistic Peer Leadership Group](http://autisticnyc.org/groups/our/leaders/) itself. Each of our groups meets primarily via text-based chat. Our in-person events are usually held by the Queens discussion group. Other in-person events are held jointly by all our groups unless otherwise specified. Our oldest group, the [Queens Discussion Group](http://autisticnyc.org/queens/), is a peer-led support/self-help group for adults (18+) who are either officially diagnosed or self-diagnosed with an autism spectrum condition, or who have difficulties similar to those of autistic people (e.g. difficulties with social communication, sensory processing, and/or executive function). This Meetup group is also being used to help launch [various other groups](http://autisticnyc.org/groups/our/) led by members of [ApLEG](http://autisticnyc.org/groups/our/leaders/), until these groups get big enough to justify having their own Meetup sites. These groups will include hobby-oriented social groups and career-oriented groups, among others. The first of the [hobby-oriented social groups](http://autisticnyc.org/groups/our/hobby/) is an [amateur meteorology club](http://autisticnyc.org/groups/our/hobby/weather/). We hope there will eventually be many more (including -- we hope -- a sewing hobbyists club, at least some of whose members could be of great help to the autistic community as a whole, by making relatively inexpensive custom-made clothes to accommodate a variety of sensory issues). The first of the [career-oriented groups ](http://autisticnyc.org/groups/our/career/)is [Autistic Techies of the NYC Area](http://autisticnyc.org/groups/our/career/tech/). We hope there will eventually be many more such groups devoted to other categories of professions / occupations / jobs. It is strongly recommended that members protect their privacy, here on Meetup, by using either a pseudonym or just their first name and last initial. See [Warnings about online harassment](http://autisticnyc.org/onlineRes/warn.html). (You can change your displayed name here on Meetup.)

SOCCER FOR FUN

Queens Village, NY

SOCCER FOR FUN

Welcome to SOCCER FOR FUN!  We are a Co-Ed Adult Soccer Club for those who love the game of soccer and are searching for a friendly and exciting atmosphere to enjoy it. Our players' skills range from beginners to more advanced players that enjoy playing more relaxed games than those found in competitive leagues.

Our games will be held primarily at Raymond O'Conner Park 33rd Avenue & Corporal Kennedy St. Bayside NY 11361  or at Alley Pond Sports Center Park located at corner of Union Turnpike and Winchester Blvd, Queens Village (79-20 Winchester Blvd, Queens Village, NY 11427) starting at 9:00 AM sharp! Members should always check the site for any updates on the venue and times. We will host various games from small pug games to big field 11 v. 11 games to exciting tournaments throughout the year.  In addition to our weekly games from time to time we will host other events such as attending professional soccer matches, viewing sporting events at local pubs, annual BBQ and so on.

Code of Conduct

·  Never be disrespectful to other players or opponents

·  Foul language will be frowned upon and unacceptable

·  Obey the RSVP rules

Rules of Play

·  Slide tackling, high kicks or rough play strictly prohibited

·  Penalties in the box if intentional are taken otherwise kicks are always indirect (except during a tournament)

·  Not all games will have referees so please respect any call made by any player on the field.  All disputes will be settled by your Team Captain.

RSVP Rules

If you sign up and make a team for the game you are expected at the field ready, willing and able to play.  All Members can update their RSVP before teams are posted the night before the game.  If you fail to update timely or to show up at a game you will not be permitted to sign up for the next two weeks.  If you fail to show twice you will not be able to sign up for two months.  This rule is enforced in order to get the players on the field that want to play especially if there is a waiting list.  Any and all emergencies will be taken under consideration and any last minute drops if you notify your organizers we will try to get a replacement player for the game thereby preventing a no show.  Our goal is to have full games each week and getting as many members on the field as possible.

Our Club’s mission is to provide a warm, friendly and safe environment for players to come and enjoy Soccer.

Jamaica Rugby Club

Jamaica, NY

Ever since moving from the UK, I have missed playing rugby or even just rugby training. I see some rugby clubs in NYC, but they all train and play too far away. My ultimate goal for this group is for a Rugby Club to form in the Jamaica area that has teams for men, women, girls and boys. Rugby has always been an inclusive, fun and tough sport. People of all shapes and sizes can take part, people of all skill levels can play too. Socially, it's the best sport I've ever been involved in. One of the big things with rugby though, is it can be played competitively, yet socially throughout your life. There's no need to wear armor or helmets, no need for skates or sticks. Just a ball, cleats, maybe a couple of tackle pads to hold for practice. There is still risk for injury when playing full contact, but only the ball carrier can be tackled, so it's less likely to be blindsided. To begin with though, I know I can't expect a team of 15+ players ready to play in any age group, but I would like to see a few people interested in just throwing a ball around, running some drills to practice, have enough people to play touch rugby together too and maybe get used to tackling, rucking, mauling and scrummaging safely. We'd go over the laws of the game, as it can seem intimidating or confusing, but it's really easy. Traditionally, rugby practice is Tuesday and Thursday evenings for adults, Saturday mornings for kids, club games would be played on Saturdays, and I'd like to use either Roy Wilkins Park on Merrick Blvd or Baisley Park south of Rockaway Blvd - but really any Football or Soccer pitch will work - actual grass is better, but turf will work too. If you played Football in college, want your kids to play something a bit tougher than soccer but less dangerous than football, but still instill the drive, teamwork and competitive spirit that football gives, then rugby really could be the sport for you.
