"The “Gentle Art” or “Art of Suppleness” (this is the meaning of ju-jitsu in Japanese) does not neutralize power with power but aims to rationally absorb an attack and convert that energy to the opponent’s own detriment. So it is designed to defend you with a flexible reaction on violence." We will engage in sportive activities with elements of cardio, strength, stability, and, of course, Ju-Jitsu techniques. Ju-Jitsu is a contact sport, so expect to engage in physical contact with other members. It's important to note that everyone has different physical capabilities and levels of comfort. Therefore, an open dialog between members when engaging in Ju-Jitsu is crucial. **Do you have to have experience in Ju-Jitsu?** No. The focus is on fitness, socializing, and having fun while learning elements of Ju-Jitsu. You train at your own pace and comfort level. Origins*** * Japanese Ju-Jitsu (JJJ) ‒ Originating in Japan as one of the first martial arts, JJJ came from samurai hand-to-hand combat. The idea was that samurai could defend themselves with Ju-Jitsu when their weapons were destroyed or lost. * Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) ‒ BJJ actually comes from Judo, not Ju-Jitsu. Followers of JJJ adapted the martial art into judo and taught it around the world. In the early 1900s, judo teacher Mitsuyo Maeda taught Judo in Brazil. One of his students was Carlos Gracie, who then created the style of BJJ. ***B. Moves*** * JJJ ‒ Throws, joint locks, chokes, kicks, and strikes are all moves used in JJJ. The main goal is to use strength and momentum against your opponent to overpower them. Ju-Jitsu is more about analyzing your opponent’s moves and quickly finding a way to bring them down. One hard throw could be enough to keep them down, unlike BJJ, where you hold down your opponent. * BJJ ‒ Consisting mostly of grappling, BJJ takes place primarily on the ground, with the goal to force submission onto the opponent. By using leverage and grip, moves like chokes and strangles make the opponent give up. ***C. Purpose*** * JJJ is used as a form of self-defense, fitness, and personal development. * BJJ is mostly used as a competitive sport. Moves like submissions or dominant positions earn you points and determine a winner. **Important:** This is not a paid class or club. This is a purely social group engaging in sportive activities. Your attendance is voluntary, at your own risk, and free of charge. A waiver (link will be provided in each scheduled event, or print-outs will be made available at the time of the event) must be signed before attending each event. **About me:** My name is Tim. I moved from Germany to the Lehigh Valley in early 2020, and now want to get involved in my community by teaching some basic Ju-Jitsu skills and bringing people together. I started doing Ju-Jitsu in Germany in 1998, but haven't gotten back into it in the States yet. To this day, I'm still a member of my home club [Ju Jutsu Club Peine e.V.](www.jjc-peine.de), even if I don't get to train there anymore. I was a member of my club's training team training adults and kids for many years, as well as of the board organizing training and social events. Outside of my club, I was a referee for the Ju-Jitsu Fighting System, and head referee of my home state for six years, supporting this beautiful sport in Germany. Question? The group was formed to bring together like-minded individuals in the spirit of positive fellowship.  It is our mission, that new friendships be born and cultivated, all while engaging in the numerous, and varied activities that the membership enjoys. This is a group for anyone interested in hiking, biking, kayaking, wineries and breweries, comedy shows, festivals, sporting events, live music, dancing, karaoke, dining out, tubing, volleyball, lawn games, and… the list goes on! Meetup profiles are intended to represent authentic people in the local area.  Profiles are to be honest and genuine. Members are expected to conduct themselves with high standards of morality, integrity, and decency. The group is dedicated to providing a welcoming community for everyone. We look forward to the respectful and courteous interaction of all of our members, at each of our gatherings.  Most importantly, it is our desire that everyone have fun, while enjoying each other’s company! On most occasions, tables and seats will be reserved, at the venues for our indoor gatherings. This is done so that we can all be together, and enjoy ourselves.  If it becomes necessary to change your RSVP, please make your intentions known, no later than noon, the day before the event.  Otherwise, a seat will be waiting for you.  Thank you for extending your consideration to the hosts, and the establishments, that work hard to make us feel welcome!
