Join us for a scenic and relaxed day hike along the Waterlinie Trail, a route shaped by history and water. This walk offers a mix of urban charm, open landscapes, and historic defenses—all tied together by waterways.
We’ll start by passing through Castellum, a colorful district of Houten with houses perched along the water, connected by small bridges. From there, the route follows canals, crosses the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal, and leads us into the Verdronken Bos, where a 300-meter wooden boardwalk takes us through a drowned forest—an eerie yet beautiful sight.
The second half of the hike brings us into the New Dutch Waterline, a historic defense system designed to flood the land and keep invaders at bay. We’ll walk past forts, locks, and floodplains along the Lek River, even crossing the river on a small ferry. Along the way, we’ll take a break at a converted fort café or find a nice spot in Culemborg to unwind.

About contribution:
While the goal is to include as many people as possible, spots are limited to maintain the necessary calm for the event, and no-shows have previously prevented willing wait-listers from joining. Your contribution is therefore a commitment to attendance and an act of respect for those genuinely interested. At the end of the year, whatever is left after covering meetup costs will be donated to Doctor's Without Borders.
