- Read a Book, Take a Hike, Have Some Food, and Understand Your Attachment StyleAmir Garden Trailhead, Los Angeles, CA
From academic studies to Internet searches, attachment theory has been embraced by both medical professionals and the lay public as a means of understanding how people behalf in romantic relationships.
In this groundbreaking book, psychiatrist and neuroscientist Amir Levine and psychologist Rachel S. F. Heller reveal how an understanding of attachment theory-the most advanced relationship science in existence today-can help us find and sustain love. Attachment theory forms the basis for many bestselling books on the parent/child relationship, but this is considered the most accessible guide to what this fascinating science has to tell us about adult romantic relationships.
• Anxious people are often preoccupied with their relationships and tend to worry about their partner's ability to love them back.
• Avoidant people equate intimacy with a loss of independence and constantly try to minimize closeness.
• Secure people feel comfortable with intimacy and are usually warm and loving.
MY THOUGHTS: I found this book to be an excellent introduction to the concept of attachment theory (which may be why millions of people have read it since its publication a decade ago).

POTLUCK: Closer to the event we can discuss what people plan to bring to share.
IMPORTANT ABOUT ATTENDANCE: We are giving people two months to read this book. Please don't RSVP if you think it's likely you'll slough this off and not read the book or not attend. Since we want to keep the group small to allow discourse, anyone who quickly signs up but then drops out weeks from now will automatically go to the end of the line for any future book clubs. Please keep that in mind before you say you're going.
THE HIKE: It's only about a mile, with 200 feet of gain. This is more about socializing and having good discussions in a beautiful spot than about a workout. It will pair well if you want to do a big hike on Saturday or Sunday during the day.
THE PLACE: Amir’s Garden is no mere garden; it’s a unique picnic area on the east side of the park.
For thirty-two years, Amir Dialameh worked in the garden most days of the week. He planted pine and jacaranda trees along with rose bushes, geraniums, oleander, and yucca that grew into the beautiful oasis it is today.
His goal was to make, "an attractive rest stop for hikers," because outdoor recreation was as important to him as breathing. "There are so many problems, so many pressures," Dialameh once said of city life. "All people do is complain. They need to get away from that."
