Walk with Ray: Capturing Movement at the BWI Airport
Location: Meet at Observation Gallery inside the BWI Airport
(Near the Southwest Terminal)
- DATE: 25 April 2025 (FRI Evening)
- Time: 6:00pm-8:00pm
- Price: FREE (Except parking)
SUMMARY:
Let's explore the art of capturing motion by using slower shutter speeds and creative compositions. There are a few techniques that I want to practice on this event:
Objects/People in motion:
- When the subject of the image is the one item moving while the background remains in focus.
Background in motion:
- Making the subject in focus while the background/surrounding is blurred
Intentional Camera Movement (ICM)
- Using intentional camera shake to show movement of the entire frame but in an artistic way (most difficult method).
My goal is to provide you with different techniques to capture motion in a way that you intend to portray in your images. This event will also challenge you with the stealthiness of street photography, creative compositions, and better understanding of the exposure triangle.
We will meet upstairs in the Observatory Gallery inside the Southwest Terminal area. I will go over the techniques and information, answer any questions and provide camera assistance. Then we will split up into small groups inside and outside so that we do not look like a photo group or paparazzi.
Then we will regroup at the Observatory Gallery at 8:00 to share our experiences.
Notes:
We will be in a very crowded area with many people and security. Be mindful of the privacy of people (especially children) and try to be non-intrusive or noticeable as we spread out across the terminal and outside.
With that said, pack very light and have small lenses. Nobody will draw more attention in an airport than a photographer with a huge zoom lens.
If asked to stop taking pics by official airport staff or individuals, comply and do not challenge, we do not want to create a scene either.
Equipment Needed:
- Camera or phone
- Lens: compact prime or short zoom/telephoto lenses to be less conspicuous. We will be using slower shutter speeds, so fast lenses are not critical.
- NO Tripods/Monopods
- ND Filters will help slow shutter speeds if you have any
- Remote (wireless) shutter release (if available) or Phone remote app for camera operations. (this will help a lot but not required)
Camera familiarity PRIOR to event (Refer to your camera manual):
- Know how to set your camera in Manual Mode
- Know how to set for burst shutter mode
- Know how to adjust the Exposure using Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO
- Know how to connect your remote trigger or phone app to your camera
- Know how to set silent shutter release
I will try to have handouts ready.
I am no expert at these techniques, but come with me and we can learn and experiment together.
As always, there is no cost or limit to who attends (Parking up to individuals)
Let's take a walk...
