What we’re about
Hello!!! This group is for hikers and walkers of all abilities who want to get out in a supportive, group setting in the Hudson Valley. Most events will be within an hour of the Newburgh area.
There will be a mixture of walks for all abilities, and hikes for the more experienced hikers, though at a relaxed pace. If you want to run through the woods this is not the group for you.
Although we travel at a relaxed-moderate pace, most of the hikes will require a reasonable level of fitness and agility and some will not be for beginners and will be posted as such.
Most hikes will range from about 4 miles to 6 miles and will be accurately described according to difficulty. The pace will be relaxed- moderate, but not terribly slow, with up hill climbs being taken at a slower pace and rest stops for breath catching. No one will be left behind. Typically the time for the hike, from start to end, will be about 3-6 hours. I'll expect the group to stay together, and no one will be left behind. Occasionally the group may be asked to hike in silence for awhile in order to fully appreciate the beauty of our magnificent area. The terrain for the HIKES will typically NOT BE EASY. There will be rocks on the trail, rock-hopping across small streams, occasional short clambers up over some rocks, and significant climbs. The reward will be beautiful scenery, wild flowers, waterfalls, etc. and some great exercise. I hope our hikes will be a group effort while establishing an intimate hub of regulars who get to know and look forward to seeing each other. I appreciate your input and requests for any hikes you'd like to do.
If all this appeals to you, join up and welcome to you!

See all- Happy Breakneck Hike!!! :-)Breakneck Ridge Parking Lot (41.445766,-73.979326), Beacon, NY
Yeah Breakneck!! This is a strenuous hike with tons of rock scrambling. It is not for beginners. NO SNEAKERS. Recent hiking (not walking, biking, running) experience necessary. Please answer the question to attend. Joint w/ OCOS.
If you haven't done this PLEASE read the trip description and reviews at Breakneck Ridge Loop | New York-New Jersey Trail Conference. I am sure you can find a video if you want to see the scramble. It is tough. If you show up in sneakers I will ask you to find a new destination for your day.
Breakneck is a mountain you don't mess with......it's not for beginners or couch potatoes but if you hike and are in shape you'll appreciate this. There is significant scrambling for the first part of it. Hands and feet, sweat, it's wonderful. :-) You won't think that until the end!! :-) :-) :-)
It is not a long hike, but don't let that fool you!! We will most likely dine in Beacon afterwards.
Bring: WATER, snacks, basic first aid supplies, and your camera....... :-) Hiking boots mandatory.
We will meet on 9D roughly 5 miles south of Beacon along the river, you may see lots of cars, or not as we are starting early...........park!!!! If you go through the tunnel going southbound you have gone too far........heading north you go through the tunnel and it's along on your right. Meet at the trailhead by the tunnel.
Rain or wet rocks will change things. I will post the night before if I think we may have to change things. Always check your computer before the event. $2 Meetup fee.
ALL HIKES ARE AT YOUR OWN RISK. By signing up for or attending this event, you certify that you will read, understand and agree to the terms and conditions of the OCOS/HVRPH&W Liability Waiver that you will need to sign to attend. Happy trails!!!
