What we’re about
We are a diverse and friendly bunch who enjoy watching and discussing moving pictures.
Each month, we watch a film at home (we try to nominate films that are widely available on DVD and/or streaming sites), then come together to talk about what we liked, what we didn't, and to choose the next ones.
During the session, we discuss the last film we’ve chosen, and put forward suggestions for the next one. We then choose the next film using a randomiser.
The vibe is informal. Respectful discussion and debate is encouraged, and the range of genres and topics reflects the diversity of the group, which helps keep things fresh and intriguing🍋
We look forward to meeting you soon🙂
If you like reading too, why not join our sister club, Ipswich Book Club, which meets on 1st Monday of each month (excluding Bank Holidays).
Time and place
We meet every month (usually the first Monday, unless it’s a Bank Holiday) at 7pm for a 7.30pm start, with a break halfway. The events ‘end’ at 9pm, but a number of us stay afterward to socialise.
Our venue is the Thomas Wolsey - a cosy Tudor pub on St Peter’s Street in the ‘Saints’ area of Ipswich. We meet in one of the upstairs rooms - please check with the bar staff on arrival if you’re unsure.
Free parking is available right outside if you're lucky, otherwise Cromwell Square and Cardinal Park car parks are close by.
Ipswich railway station and Tower Ramparts and Cattle Market bus stations are also within walking distance.
Who can join?
All ages and backgrounds are welcome - we are an inclusive group.
The event is completely free to club members, and although most of us buy a drink from the bar, it’s not compulsory.
To become a member, please use your real name (first name at least) on your profile, and have an identifiable picture of you in your avatar (profile pic), before you click ‘join’.
This helps us to welcome new members, while also keeping everyone safe.
Want to ask something?
If you have any questions about the group, please get in touch with the host, Beren, on Meetup.
Otherwise, we look forward to meeting (and reading with) you soon🙂
Upcoming events (1)
See all- Film 13: The Little FoxesThomas Wolsey Ipswich, Ipswich
January's picture is The Little Foxes, as chosen by Beren.
Members watch the film at home on their DVD player/streaming service of choice, and meet every 3rd Monday at 7pm. Don't worry if you need to show up a little later than that, as we don't tend to start film discussion at 7 on the dot.
We have a break midway through to get a drink and pop to the loo, and everyone is welcome to stay on afterwards for further chat.
We meet in the upstairs room of The Thomas Wolsey pub in Ipswich. As you reach the landing, it's the room in front of you with a door, dartboard and red sofas.
We use this this pub because:
- There's parking nearby in the Cromwell Square car park (charged)
- The upstairs room has been booked just for us
- It's reasonably central. Map.
- No loud music, so we can chat and be heard
- It's also walking distance from several places to buy hot food
If you want to chat before showing up or would prefer to meet outside, you can DM Beren on Meetup.
