What we’re about
JRCC was formed in 1945 and is one of the oldest, continuing photography clubs in Virginia. Our mission is to offer programs and activities of interest to the beginning photographer as well as the professional. We have a number of professionals in our membership who contribute exceptional programs frequently for our membership and guests. We aspire to advance the art and craft of photography aesthetically and technically for all who wish to participate.
Note: Any photograph submitted to the club and / or posted by member, the JRCC retains the right to exhibit these photos only for the purpose these were submitted.
If you want to Join James River Camera Club just show up at any meetup posted and you can meet folks and decide if you would like it. We try to meet in person each month. Of course the Pandemic messed us up a bit and we did and still do some as ZOOM meetups.
Upcoming events (4+)
See all- Light PaintingTemple Baptist Church, Newport News, VA
Bring your camera and tripod to tonight’s meeting as we explore Light Painting. Skip Barber and Bonnie Madre will give us a class on this interesting subject. You will learn the proper camera settings to use and how to create this effect. The skills you learn here can be combined with Intentional Camera Movement (ICM) to create interesting abstract photographs (remember, Abstract Photos is our August photo contest theme!)
So, don’t forget to bring your camera and tripod and be prepared to learn a new skill or practicing one you might already know.
We will Zoom the start of the meeting and the discussion. It may be difficult to send the video due to the limited light available. However, here is the link to the meeting.

- There Are Places - A presentation from photographer Michael Wadeblackwater library carrollton , carrollton, VA
Our March meeting will feature a presentation from photograph Michael Wade. Mr. Wade’s presentation is titled, “There Are Places” which chronicles his career in photography.
Mr. Wade said, "I became involved with photography around 1977. I was getting married, quit playing rock and roll, and thought I’d return to “my first love” which was writing. I figured I could take a picture and then use it as a visual reference for a story. Like most people I started out with a 35mm – a Pentax K 1000 if I remember correctly – but as I started studying the work of people like Adams, Strand, Weston…I got a 4x5 camera and set up a darkroom in the garage.
Soon I realized that the image was the story. My work was exhibited at the Chrysler Museum in the early 1980s, I shot for local magazines, and eventually ran two studios for weddings and portraits. My career, like many photographers of my era, basically came to and end around 2012. In 2016 I started working with reenactors and then in 2018 I returned to my roots, photographing abandoned places.
I recently had an exhibit of that work that ran at the Rawls Art Museum from December 2024 – February 2025.
In my presentation I’ll be discussing the nature of the project “There Are Places.” What drew me to this subject matter, and how I approach it as a photographer, historian, and a writer.

- I'll Show You Mine If You Show Me Yours!Temple Baptist Church, Newport News, VA
This is your chance to display to the other members of the club what you’ve got! Don’t be shy. We all like to show off.
That’s right, this meeting will give you the opportunity to bring in your favorite or most obscure bit of camera equipment and show it to the other members. Who knows, someone may have been looking for a solution to an issue that you can help them with. It will give us a chance to learn and have some fun at the same time.
Let me know at jrccphotos@gmail.com if you want to participate. Just let me know what you plan on using for camera show and tell.
Also, even if you are going to participate through Zoom only, you can still be part of the meeting!!! Who knows, you may be the star of this show.
