Many foreigners may think that Kyoto has long history. That’s true. For more than 1200 years, Kyoto flourished as Japanese capital.
However, Osaka also has a long history. Since Kyoto was an inland city, there wasn’t enough port to do trading.
Since Kyoto and Osaka were very close and Osaka was surrounded by many rivers and sea, Osaka flourished as logistics hub and port town for trading.
That’s because Hideyoshi Toyotomi built Osaka castle (He wanted to control Osaka and logistics, trade), which is gorgeous and large scale in late 16th century.
In 17th century, even after Toyotomi family was defeated by Ieyasu Tokugawa, who opened Edo Shogunate and built foundation forTokyo, Osaka had been flourished as the economic center in Japa.
In the late 19th century, following industrial and political revolution in EU countries, Japan also followed its trend and Tokugawa (Edo) Shogunate finished. In Japan, industrial revolution proceeded so quickly and many western-style buildings were constructed.
Osaka was not the exception.
More and more factories and western buildings were built and economy rapid quickly. At that time, Osaka was also called ‘Asian version of Manchester’, breaking point of industrial revolution.
This time was when Osaka’s main street, Midosuji street was made.
Midosuji street is Osaka’s north-south street.
In the past, in Osaka, north-south streets were not popular.
Rather, east-west street was popular since Osaka’s downtown flourished near Osaka’s castle, which located east side of Osaka. So, the east-west streets were popular.
However, in the 19th century, trains were made in Osaka.
Umeda, which is located north and connects Osaka and Kyoto, Kobe and Namba, which is located South and connects Osaka and Nara, developed as terminal station and demand for connecting those two stations increased.
However, at that time, Midosuji street was very narrow.
In 1923, Hajime Seki, who was a mayor in Osaka , broadened and started building Midosuji street. Also, the subway Midosuji line was paved along the street. Because of this subway, many people outside came to be able to go to city center easily and business district was made along. Today, its street is the main street in Osaka.
In this tour, by walking along Midosuji street, we learn such background city of Osaka and its street. Also, you can take picture of night light-up of skyline of Osaka !!

多くの外国人は京都には長い歴史があると考えており、それは事実でもあります。1200年以上もの間、京都は日本の首都として栄えてきました。
しかし、大阪にも長い歴史があります。ま京都は内陸都市であったため、貿易を行うのに最適な港がありませんでした。
京都と大阪は非常に近く、また、大阪は多くの川と海に囲まれていたため、物流に最適であり、大貿易の港町として栄えました。
また、豊臣秀吉が16世紀後半に豪華で大規模な大阪城を築城したのも、大阪が物流に最適な土地であり、秀吉がその物流網を支配したからだったとされています。17世紀に、豊臣家が江戸幕府を開き、今日の東京の基礎を築いた徳川家康に敗れた後も、大阪は日本の経済の中心地として栄えていました。
19世紀後半、ヨーロッパの産業革命と政治革命に続いて日本も明治維新が起こり、日本では産業革命が急速に進み、多くの洋風建築が建てられました。
大阪もその例外ではありませんでした。大阪では工場や洋風建築がどんどん建てられ、経済が急速に発展しました。当時、大阪は産業革命の勃発地である、マンチェスターにちなみ、「東洋のマンチェスター」というあだ名がついていました。
この頃に、大阪のメインストリートである御堂筋が作られました。
御堂筋は大阪の南北の通りです。昔、大阪では南北の通りは人気がありませんでした。むしろ、昔は、大阪の東側に位置する大阪城を起点に街が作られていたため、南北よりも東西を結ぶ通りの移動需要の方が高かったのです。
しかし、19世紀になると、大阪に電車が作られました。
北に位置し、大阪と京都、神戸を結ぶ梅田と、南に位置し、大阪と奈良を結ぶ難波がターミナル駅として発展し、両駅を結ぶ需要が高まりました。
当時の御堂筋はとても狭いものでした。1923年、当時の大阪市長だった関一が御堂筋を拡張し、建設を開始しました。また、御堂筋沿いに地下鉄御堂筋線が敷かれました。この地下鉄のおかげで、多くの人が都心部へ出かけやすくなり、沿道にビジネス街ができました。現在、御堂筋は大阪のメインストリートとなっています。
このツアーでは、御堂筋を歩きながら、そんな大阪の街や街並みの背景を学びます。また、大阪の夜景と高層ビルも撮影できます!!
