What, On Friday May 9th travel about 4 hours east to our private ranch and birding Oasis on the prairie . The ranch is thick with trees and available water for migrating and resident birds that you are unlikely to ever see along the front range in Colorado. Experienced birders will be on hand and are very welcoming of beginners.
Schedule of events. Arrive Friday in the town of Atwood. We will meet for dinner at one of the local eateries. Two choices usually.
Early Saturday Morning a group will head out to see our resident Prairie chickens, new this year !
If you don't want to wake up early a second group will head out around 8:00 and head to the birding Oasis where we will spend the day looking for the specialty birds of the area, I can promise you the trees will be full of birds. It won't be hard to find them
Saturday afternoon back to town with a couple extra stops along the way. I do have a secret barn owl location to check out this year.
A few of the birds that will easily be seen include
Red Headed Woodpeckers, Red Bellied woodpeckers, Brown Thrashers, Northern Cardinals, Great Crested Flycatchers, Baltimore orioles, Orchard Orioles, Horned Larks, Lark Buntings, Swainson's Thrush.
Note prairie chickens are in the area but they won’t be “lekking” this late in the season.
And we are also likely to see. Nashville Warblers, Indigo Buntings. Last year we logged a Summer Tanager, Tennessee Warbler , Black Tern and more.
Note I put a $10 fee on the event this year, I do need some new shoes. No seriously two reasons. I want to make sure people who sign up are serious about going we did get quite a few people who signed up last year and the never heard from again.
Any money raised will go to the Meetup Annual fee and/or beer, wine at the event
