We begin our walk in Abbey Village, a quaint Lancashire village known for its proximity to the West Pennine Moors. From here, we head toward Rake Brook Reservoir, where we can enjoy the tranquil waters surrounded by lush greenery.
From Rake Brook Reservoir, the path leads us towards Lower Roddlesworth Reservoir, a serene spot nestled in rolling hills. Enjoy the calm atmosphere as we follow the well-marked trail that meanders through a mix of open spaces and woodland. The walk continues uphill to Higher Roddlesworth Reservoir, offering more stunning views across the water and the surrounding fells.
As we continue, we take a short detour to visit Mill Lane Waterfall, a hidden gem tucked away along the trail. The sound of cascading water adds to the peaceful atmosphere. From here, we enter the enchanting Roddlesworth Woods, a beautiful area with tall trees, dappled sunlight, and well-maintained paths. The woods are a haven for wildlife and provide a great opportunity to enjoy the tranquillity of nature.
Exiting the woods, we’ll come across the ruins of Hollinshead Hall, an old manor house with its foundations and some walls still intact. The area is steeped in history, and we can explore the remains while imagining what life was like here centuries ago.
From Hollinshead Hall, we begin our ascent onto Darwen Moor, a wide expanse of rugged moorland. The climb may be challenging, but the effort is worth it as we approach Darwen Tower. Perched atop the moor, this iconic structure offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, stretching as far as the Lake District, the Isle of Man, and even the Peak District on a clear day. We’ll take a moment to climb the tower and soak in the scenery.
After descending from Darwen Tower, we make our way to the Sunnyhurst Pub, a cosy and welcoming place for a well-deserved drink. The pub offers a range of beverages and a warm, rustic atmosphere, making it a perfect stop for rest and refreshment.
Leaving the pub, we continue our walk through the picturesque Sunnyhurst Woods, with its winding paths, babbling brooks, and charming bridges. The woods are a peaceful oasis and a lovely contrast to the open moorland we’ve just crossed.
After exploring the woods, we follow the paths on the opposite side of the reservoirs offering different perspectives of the water and surrounding hills. Enjoy the calm reflections on the water as we walk past Higher and Lower Roddlesworth reservoirs once again, before finally looping back to Abbey Village, completing this scenic and varied circular route.
This walk offers a perfect blend of reservoirs, woodlands, moorlands, and historical landmarks, with plenty of opportunities to pause and enjoy the beauty of the West Pennine countryside.
It’s a dog friendly group so feel free to bring your dog (if you’ve got one) maybe a drink and a bite to eat.
