What we’re about

Welcome to Leisurely Walks around Yorkshire. PLEASE READ FULL GROUP DESCRIPTION BEFORE APPLYING TO JOIN.

We started the group in 2017 as a way of meeting other people that also enjoy walking, & to hopefully make some new friends. The group is run for those members who are genuinely interested in attending walks & meeting new people.

Most of our walks are of medium length (approx 6-9 miles) mainly on Sundays, with the occasional Saturday. We also do shorter evening walks on a Tues/Wed of up to 5 miles during the summer months (Apr-Aug), bank holiday walks & day walks on a Wed maybe once a month. Weekends away have also featured, these are mainly on the Yorkshire coast, but we may venture further afield in the future to the Lake district, possibly North Wales. We try to cover all areas of Yorkshire but the majority of our walks tend to be within West, North & East Yorks. We occasionally do walks in South Yorkshire, maybe a couple of times a year.

Walks will vary in difficulty, eg some mostly flat, some with hills etc, but will be taken at a leisurely (slowish) pace. We also try to include a water feature of some kind, such as a river, canal, stream, lake or reservoir, and hopefully some nice views or scenery for people to look at!

Conditions of membership
1. You are required to attend a walk within 6 months of joining. Failure to do so will result in removal from the group. You may request to re-join at any time provided that you then attend a walk within 3 months if you wish to remain a member. You will only be permitted to re-join the group once if you have previously been removed for the above reason. If you voluntarily decide to leave the group (without an explanation) unfortunately you will also not be permitted to re-join, sorry!

2. We require you to have a recent, clearly recognisable profile photo (of yourself) should you apply to join. Anyone not providing this will unfortunately be declined.

3. If you RSVP Yes to one of our walks then find that you aren't able to attend, for whatever reason, could you please change your RSVP to No ASAP. If you fail to attend a walk without notifying the walk leader in advance then you will be marked as a "no show", anyone with 2 "no shows" will be removed from the group. If you consistently RSVP Yes to a walk then change to No, you will be moved to 'not going' on future walks where there is a waitlist and subsequently removed from the group if this continues.

4. Our membership is reviewed on a regular basis (currently monthly) and any inactive members (those who have not visited the group in the last 3-6 months, have not attended a walk for over 1 year or within 6 months of joining) may have their membership cancelled at the organisers discretion.

Please also consider whether you are COMFORTABLE WALKING AT A LEISURELY PACE, as there are plenty of other walking groups on Meetup that cater for faster walkers.

We do not have a specific age range as such for anyone wanting to join the group, but the majority of our members that attend regular walks are aged from 40s to late 60s, we also have some regular members that are aged 70+.

We currently charge a fee of £1.00 per person per walk, which is payable before the start of each walk. Alternatively if you intend to come on regular walks with us you can pay £10 for 1 years membership with the group, which entitles you to attend as many walks as you like within 12 months. This charge is to cover Meetup site fees and walk leaders' expenses. Any surplus monies at the end of the year will be donated to a suitable charity chosen by the organisers.

As with the majority of other walking groups we are NOT INSURED AND DO NOT HAVE ANY FORMAL WALK LEADER OR FIRST AID QUALIFICATIONS. Any member/guest taking part in our walks does so at their own risk and remains responsible for their own safety.
However we do request out of courtesy to the event host that you PLEASE STAY WITH THE GROUP and do not venture too far ahead of the walk leader. We do not want to lose anyone that has taken the wrong path by being too far in front of the group.

Please be courteous & respectful to other members at all times. We also forbid inappropriate messages. We are a walking group not a social/dating site. Anyone sending such messages will be instantly removed from the group. Should you receive an inappropriate communication, then please let one of the organisers know.

Well behaved dogs are welcome on all our walks where possible. Dogs must be on a lead when requested (especially around livestock etc) and kept under close control at all times.

Thank you for looking at our group. If you decide to join us we very much look forward to seeing you on one of our walks!
