What we’re about
This is for people who are into new bands and old films, particularly cult and alternative stuff that's relatively affordable. C'mon, do you really want to join two different groups? We also show social online films: we watch something good (and preferably free) online and hang out via WhatsApp while it's on.
We're an open and friendly group, so if you have interesting taste and a willingness to organise people, collar me at an event because I'm looking to build up a group of hosts who are into a diverse range of stuff. In the meantime, if there's something you want to go to, say so in the Discussions and I'll see what I can do.
Three other points: 1) If you want to go to something it's best to book early, these events often sell out (yes, even the movies), 2) If you come to an event and can't find anyone, post on the event page and we'll look for you, and 3) If you can't make it, make sure to change your RSVP to No beforehand because we have a three strikes policy for no shows - as in three strikes and you're out.
Upcoming events (4+)
See all- Teeth of the Sea + SmoteICA, London
Teeth of the Sea play experimental psych with electronica leanings and an array of influences they say includes Morricone, Eno, Delia Derbyshire, Goblin and the Butthole Surfers. And they're pretty good! Here are a couple of vids from the new album:

They're ably supported by Smote and their terrific noisy, doomy psych rock. We saw them at the Shacklewell last year and they were great, even if rumours suggest they've downsized from their two-drummer line up. They're also a lot heavier live than on record.

Tickets here. Doors officially open at 7.30pm but let's meet at 7, grab a pre-drink at the ICA bar and head in afterwards.
- Vanishing Point (1971)Prince Charles Cinema, London
Kowalski used to be a cop, then a racecar driver. But now he's a delivery man, hurtling across the USA in a muscle car, wired on speed and pirate radio, outrunning the cops and the establishment who would crush all our spirits, man.
Easy Rider got the props and the box office, but for my money Vanishing Point remains the archetypal hippie countercultural road movie. Primal Scream named one of their albums after this and also sampled the dialogue, as they had done with The Wild Angels a few years previous. It's rad regardless.

Tickets here, I'm in B6. We can meet up outside afterwards and talk the movie over in a nearby pub.
- Walkabout (1971)Prince Charles Cinema, London
Nic Roeg followed up his electrifying debut, Performance, with this, a poetic depiction of a brother and sister from the Australian city who are left to fend for themselves in the outback, before they meet an Aboriginal boy who guides them through.
That's the main plot anyway, it's fair to say the film itself is more ambiguous in execution. Lots of imagery and not a lot of dialogue, concentrating on the sense of isolation and the distance between nature and what most of us think of as the civilised world. The trailer is a bit dated but you get the idea:

Tickets here, I'm in C6. We can meet at 8 for a pre-drink around the corner and head in afterwards.
- 24 Hour Party People (2002) - YouTubeNeeds location
See, I told you lot this would go out tonight. Using a mixture of fact, myth and imagination, 24 Hour Party People tells the story of Tony Wilson, the TV host who set up Factory Records, home of Joy Division, New Order, the Happy Mondays and a bunch of bands you probably haven't heard of. And they launched the Hacienda nightclub, the most famous club of the acid house era. Not bad for a decade's work.
Anyway, this is helmed by Michael Winterbottom (you could argue no director this interesting in the past 30 years has also been this British), with Steve Coogan in the lead and the real-life cast played by the likes of John Thomson, Paddy Considine, Lennie James, Andy Serkis, John Simm and Ralf Little.

As always, we rendezvous at 7.45pm online and press play together 15 minutes later, chatting through a WhatsApp group while the move is on. Link to the group and the film will be up by 7.15pm. Don't be late, don't no show!
