What we’re about
Bonjour!
I am Mariette! A hard-core Francophile, (and francophone), who enjoys sharing my love for French arts, culture and cuisine with anyone else who shares this passion or is simply curious to learn!.
As a multi-media artist whose practice revolves around mostly French things (not all, but mostly), I love chatting about art, European art history, and current cultural events. I like to also experience good food! French pastries you say?? Got you covered! We schedule regular croissant/pastry and other food experiences around the greater Los Angeles area. Always open to new suggestions as well.
No- you don’t have to be a speaker of French to join - but we will soon have separate French conversation and beginners French language meetups— which will be clearly marked as such.
Our meetups include:
Coffee chats
Museum/gallery visits
Art/paint experiences
Brunch/lunch/dinner etc, all with a Parisian/French vibe to them.
I look forward to meeting you, and hope you gain new insight and make some new friends by attending one of our upcoming events!
À bientôt!
Mariette

TAIX (pronounced “Tex” in French)
The family, which owns the restaurant, pronounces it “Tex.”HISTORY OF AN L.A. ICON
The Taix Family are the third and fourth generations of a family of sheepherders and bakers from the “Hautes-Alpes” in southeastern France who immigrated to Los Angeles around 1870. In 1912 Marius Taix Sr. built a hotel called the Champ d’Or in downtown Los Angeles’ French quarter. In 1927, Marius Taix Jr. opened Taix French restaurant within the hotel serving chicken dinners for 50 cents at long “family-style” tables. Diners could choose private booth service for an extra quarter. Taix’s novel food, unique service and affordable prices make it a Los Angeles institution.
The present location opened in 1962 and carried on by Marius’ son, Raymond Taix, who made sure that the character of the restaurant remained unchanged.
Now in 2025… Owner Michael Taix, the son of Raymond Taix, whose passion for French Cuisine and Wines has resulted in an extensive, Award-Winning wine list which has to date, proudly served more than three generations of Angelenos and World Travelers, and We look forward to serving You and Your Family for many generations to come.
WHAT’S HAPPENING TO TAIX? I HEARD THEY WERE CLOSING.
Some of you who may have attended one of my previous events at Taix may recall I said they were closing. That’s absolutely TRUE!! They continue to lease the property from the new owners until all the zoning and red-tape is completed. In part, the new project has been held up while preservation groups and some members of City Council have proposed to NOT raze this historic property.
Overview
Taix is undergoing redevelopment, with plans to replace the existing building with a six-story mixed-use development featuring housing and retail, including a smaller version of the restaurant.
• Redevelopment Plans: The property, now owned by Holland Partner Group, is slated for a six-story complex with 170 apartments, including some affordable units, and a smaller version of Taix restaurant on the ground floor.
• Restaurant's Future: The restaurant, owned by the Taix family, will return to the property as a tenant in the new development, with a smaller version of the restaurant, including the bar and lounge, planned.
• Preservation Efforts: While the existing building will be demolished, some iconic elements like the bar top and the rooftop billboard will be preserved and incorporated into the new development.
