What we’re about
Welcome to "Yet Another Hiking Group in Luxembourg"!
Please read all of the below carefully before you apply to become a group member.
What is YAHGIL about?
This group is about hiking in Luxembourg.
- Most times REALLY in Luxembourg, but sometimes in the surrounding countries, like Belgium, France, or Germany.
- Most times it is ONLY about hiking, but sometimes it may include picnics, swimming, or barbecue.
- Most times it will not rain, we promise! And if it does, we apologize in advance, but we will hike anyway :)
- Most times it will be brisk walks between 15 and 20km, but sometimes it can be just a light promenade. In winter it might be sometimes too cold for more than 10km.
Who can apply?
Everyone passionate about hiking is welcome.
If you are not trained at all, you might consider not joining the hard ones first, but once in a while there will be hikes suitable for beginners, just read the description for each event carefully.
We are dog-friendly, and if your dog is friendly with people and other dogs, feel free to bring it along!
We expect a "clearly recognizable profile photo", to keep fakes and spammers out.
If there is any reason for not having such a photo, let's talk about it. Send us a message if your application was rejected or not answered, and make sure that we can reply, check your mailbox settings.
Who are we?
The group owner has been hiking in Luxembourg and the greater region since early 2019. Over time, several co-organizers have joined and we're able to organize hikes almost every weekend, unless all of us are out of town at the same time.
If you're interested in organizing hikes as well, let us know, and you may become an organizer in the group
What are we looking for?
We look for beautiful routes, new ones to explore, and the best ones to be repeated occasionally.
And we're looking for nice people to join us, good discussions during the hikes, but also enjoying the silence and the sound of nature.
If you happen to know a beautiful route, we're always open for suggestions, but be aware that we cannot consider every idea and we cannot promise if and when we go somewhere.
What do we expect from you?
- Be on time if possible, and if you're late, let us know immediately. There is some tolerance and we wait for you if we know you're coming, but don't let it become a habit
- Unsubscribe as soon as you know you can't make it, even if it is 5 minutes before or after the official start of the event, it makes checking the participant list much easier and your spot can be taken by someone from the waiting-list.
- Use public transport if we provide information about it, or the carpool to be eco-friendly and reduce the amount of cars that are used
Member contribution
While the membership in MeetUp is free for normal users like you, the group owners have to pay a subscription, which has constantly increased over the years.
I have set up a fundraiser on GoFundMe with the fictitious goal of "1 EUR per group member", and you can contribute whatever you feel comfortable with.
Be it 1 EUR per year, 1 EUR per hike, or 1 EUR per km (just kidding).
Let me know if the link doesn't work or you need to use a different way, like Payconiq or cash.
It's completely voluntary, but it helps a lot to cover the MeetUp subscription and all the small things that add up during the year.
Final remarks
There are comprehensive charters existing in other groups, with dozens of rules, but we try to get around it without that, although most of the listed points absolutely make sense and they are valid here as well, but without the need to state it. Our group, our rules.
The necessary legal minimum to claim:
"All Events are at your own risk, there is no liability by the hosts for any damage. Also, each participant is responsible for respecting the sanitary measures that might be in place at the particular moment, like distance and mask-wearing."
If you made it here, congratulations!
Welcome to YAGHIL, we're looking forward to hiking with you!
Cheers,
Jens.

See all- 🇦🇹 Salzkammergut Lakes & Dachstein-Glacier 🇦🇹Salzburg Airport, Salzburg
In Austria, the mountains 🏔️ are calling and we must go.
After the success of our last year Switzerland and Black Forest hikes we are following the yearly tradition with exploring the most beautiful regions of Europe. This May we will visit the breath taking Salzkammergut region.
Please read the whole description before signing up for this event!
During the panorama hiking tour from North to South you experience the most beautiful facets of the Salzkammergut-region: Starting from the gentle hills on Lake Traunsee all the way into the mountain region of the Dachstein-glacier, this hiking tour leads you from the ‚outer‘ into the ‚inner´ Salzkammergut. You proceed via high-altitude paths and rugged peaks onto the high-plateau of the Höllengebirge-mountain range and onwards into the imperial town Bad Ischl. Then along the tracks of Empress Sissi to the turquoise-blue Lake Wolfgangsee and up to the Postalm, Austria’s largest alpine pasture area. Finally once again alpine flair awaits when crossing the ravine ‚Gosaukamm‘ – with the impressive Dachstein-glacier always in broad view.

This is an organized trip by a highly reputable company I already used. These trips are self-guided, aka you will never meet with them, they do all the reservations for you, a custom phone app will be provided which not just contains the trails but point of interest along the way.
They offer a lot of trails even in this region, I have picked the cheapest one which is moderate (daily 12km avg) to accommodate causal hikers as well. Those of us who are up for additional challenges there will be plenty of extra trails what we can do on our own in this region, eg.: the group can split up, some of us do a hard trail the rest sticks with the normal.
The package is reasonably priced, all the hotels along the way are included. This is not a circular hike but a point A to B trail, the company will take care of your luggage transfers (you can bring a suitcase up to 20kg) all you need to do is show up at the first hotel and hike every day, the hotels are in general ⭐⭐⭐ stars with breakfast always included. This is the best way to experience nature's tranquility 🌲 far away from the busy cities, no need to spend 2-3 hours or more on traveling to the starting point of a hike and going back at the end of the day, we wake up, have a breakfast and go.
How to get there: the only good option is flying, there is a night train from Koblenz which cost you more than the flight, Flixbus only there and takes 12 hours or drive down there which can be around 8 hours. With this connecting flight through Frankfurt you will be there in 3h45:
✈️ Luxembourg to Salzburg 14:30 LUX -> 18:15 SZG (LH 5643)
✈️ Salzburg to Luxembourg 10:30 SZG ->13:50 LUX (LH 1103)Everything is detailed on their webpage, therefore I will not make another one for this, Telegram group for the event is already open. After you submit your booking to Eurohike it can take up to 1 week until they process it. Do not book any train/plane tickets before they confirm your reservation. When booking in the description just enter: Peter's group and chose the digital map only, there is a small discount for those who book until the end of February. They will try to put us into the same hotels or hotels nearby.
I have created a carpool group for the intent as well. The rest of us who ✈️ there depending on the group size we can just book a minibus transfer in advance to the start/from the end destinations and split the cost.
I have posted this event already because currently (January) the plane ticket is still affordable so those who are committed to come are better making arrangements as soon as possible. You can expect the price of ticket to 5x and although the trail package will not increase in price (it's fix price per season, May being the cheapest) they already told me that they are getting full as many hikers booked this trail last year in advance. RSVP stays open until they still have capacity to accommodate people. This is not a first come first served event, it is a late come not served 😅. I can help carrying hiking sticks in my checked in bag (as they are not allowed in carry on bags) so you can get away with the cheapest light 8kg carry on bag if you wish. Everybody is coming for their own responsibility.
Please only RSVP for the hike if you already signed up with them and your booking is confirmed for the hike and 100% that you will participate.
See you in May. 🧀 🚶♀️🚶♂️🥾
