What we’re about
Madison isn't all young adults, some of us are over 50, but young at heart! If you live on or near the isthmus, are over 50, and are seeking new friendships, join us. We'll meet primarily between 10am - 5pm, with some events in early evenings. Are you retired? still working from home? caregiving for a spouse and need an outing? new to the area? looking for friends to meet up with to enjoy the farmers markets, trips to the library, music on the terrace, lectures, walks to galleries? recovering from an injury and need to get back into your groove? Join this group of locals in Madison WI. Meetings are held downtown more often, but we also plan activities on both East and West sides.
P.S. If we meet in a coffee shop or restaurant consider buying a drink or appetizer.

See all- Chazen Glass Exhibit - Memorial Library Special Collections - Kohler Art LibraryChazen Museum Of Art, Madison, WI
Let's meet at the Chazen exhibit and view the Toshiko Takaezu ceramics and glassware exhibit, grab a coffee at the museum cafe, visit the Kohler art library, and then walk a couple of blocks to the Memorial Library 9th floor special collections area. Get there early if you are parking as parking can be difficult. It is highly recommended to arrive in this University area by bus. It will be MUCH easier for you. This event has lots of standing; please be able to walk for most of it, though we will take a short sit-down break for coffee and a brief rest at each building. This event is for women age 50+
Per the Isthmus regarding the Chazen new exhibit, "This major retrospective of sculptor Toshiko Takaezu’s work encompasses her ceramics, sculpture and large scale environmental pieces, claiming for her a larger role in 20th century American art. Best known for her earthy “closed form” ceramic sculptures, Takaezu is notable for her reconceiving of familiar pottery vessels as a canvas for abstraction, with as much or more potential as a canvas." Read here. Also, A review of the exhibit in Houston. Plus deeper insights into Takaezu artistry
The Memorial library collection features rare books, manuscripts, archives, ephemera, and a significant reference collection. Artists might be especially interested in holdings related to fashion and design, the science of color and dying, printmaking and print history, literary subcultures and countercultures, and the history of science and technology. Both the university community and the general public are welcome to view and do research with the collections. More info about the collections.
We are visiting the Kohler library not so much to see anything in particular, but to find it and understand its value to members in our group who are artists, or have great affection for art, fashion, and design trends.
- Future of the Fed - Lecture with former Federal Reserve President - Coffee AfterGrainger Hall, Madison, WI
The Puelicher Center for Banking Education welcomes Loretta J. Mester, former president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland. Mester will share insights on the forces shaping interest rates, financial markets, and the economy. This event is for women age 50+ PLUS their friends, spouses or partners. Arriving by Madison bus is recommended, as parking in ramps is challenging on the campus. If driving, give yourself plenty of time. This event is free. Cheryl will have a MEETUP SIGN that she will be waving until the lecture starts.
This is part of the UW Lecture series and the event listing is here. If anyone is interested afterwards, we can go to the Open Book Cafe afterwards (which is 3 blocks away or 0.4 miles on Lake Mendota adjacent to the Wisconsin Union Theatre).
Your host thinks this should be particularly interesting in a time of intense focus on interest rates, effects of tariffs, bonds within a retirement portfolio, servicing the national debt, hirings and firings in the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and so forth.
- Tour New Morgridge Building - BRT Bus Trip from Hilldale Target - Cafe HollanderTarget Hilldale, Madison, WI
Let's visit the brand new Morgridge Computer Science building, built completely on donor funds. It's an architectural marvel (Cap Times article .) We will get there by BRT bus. We gather in front of the Target at Hilldale on the sidewalk by its glass atrium, facing Metcalfe's grocery (see photo), walk 1 block to the BRT bus, ride the A or F bus, and arrive one block from the Morgridge building. We will visit its atrium, gaze at its 7 monumental stair structures and glass skylight, and walk past research areas and go to the rooftop terrace. Read more about its architectural and engineering marvels here. If there's interest, we will pop our head into the adjacent Student Union (where there are restrooms). We will return to the bus stop on University Ave, and return to the Hilldale mall, and walk 1 long block to Cafe Hollander for a refreshment, where each person can order independently.
This event is for women age 50+. Have a credit card for the fare machine, or four $1 bills*. (Or, bring your farecard.) Please buy a drink or small plate if coming to Cafe Hollander. Once back at Hollander we can talk more about how to define your route, find your stops, and determine how much walking is involved. To get better acquainted with the bus routes, please have GOOGLE MAPS on your phone. Your host, Cheryl, can show you how to get real-time information on every bus using GOOGLE MAPS, and explain discounted fares and farecards. This event was intended to help make it easier for our members to get downtown without driving. We will find elevators within the building, and not walk all those steps!
*BRT buses are still taking $1 bills, but I suggest you get your ticket at the bus stop as the buses are long and it's sometimes difficult to board near the driver.
