What we’re about

What is Mafia?

Mafia is a social deduction game which combines having fun with the ability to get you thinking!

The Game Format

Mafia is a ten-player social game, although it can be played with more or fewer people with adaptations. You'll get a secret role and work with your team to win. Each game takes around 45 minutes, so we play multiple games in a row when we meet. The goal of the Mafia Team is to eliminate the rest of the players, the Citizens. The Citizens try to figure out who the Mafia members are and eliminate them.

Don't worry if you're new - our group especially welcomes beginners. We'll explain everything you need to know. Prior knowledge or experience is not required!

How Does the Game Work?

The game has two phases: Night and Day. During the Day, everyone has the chance to speak about who they think the Mafia are, then there is a vote to eliminate someone. During the Night, the Mafia can eliminate an innocent Citizen. There are also two special roles: the Don (Mafia) and the Sheriff (Citizen). At night, the Don wakes up and learns if one of the Citizens is the Sheriff. Then, the Sheriff wakes up and learns if one of the players is a Mafia. Both these roles are vital in helping their respective teams win.

The game continues until either the Mafia Team is eliminated or The Mafia outnumbers (or equals to) the Citizens. But you don't need to remember all of this; the best way to learn this game is to play it!

The Atmosphere

In some games of Mafia, discussions can become quite heated as people can get very competitive. Competition can be fun, but at Relaxed Mafia we strive to ensure that our atmosphere is gentle and inclusive with everyone being kind and supportive. Our events are kept small, meaning you can play in a quiet and relaxing environment and get to know your fellow players really well. Building friendships is just as important as winning the game! We welcome everyone, and if any player has a disability or condition then we will do our very best to make adaptations for you. For example, adaptations can be made for nervous players. Mafia is for everyone!

Why Mafia?

This game is played all over the world. People from over 50 countries and over 15,000 players take part regularly worldwide.

It's a fair game since each player can talk and contribute equally. This makes the game perhaps more suited to neurodiverse or nervous players compared to other social deduction games, where discussion phases can be a bit of a free-for-all. Regardless of your role, you can help your team win. You can get better and improve your deduction skills with practice. There's even an international ranking system for those who would like to play in competitive tournaments. Of course though, this is not obligatory, and many people just play for fun.
