This month, Sherwood Waggy will do a presentation titled Sonification.
Sonification: the translation of data into audio impressions to be heard rather than (or as well as) viewed. Historically, data including photographs have been displayed as visual images; sonification provides these data for the ears as well as for the eyes. Sonification software applications were first developed to enable visually impaired scientists to review and understand data, but have since become an industry and an art form for people who also have vision.
Sherwood Waggy’s interest in astronomy began in middle school when he read through the entire shelf of astronomy books at his home town library. During high school in the 1960’s, he built a 6” Newtonian telescope from scratch. He continued to observe the sky especially when his own children were old enough to be interested. He shares his enthusiasm today with both novices and experienced amateurs, and enjoys learning from anyone who can instruct him.
In New Jersey, Sherwood served as president of the Morris Museum Astronomical Society and executive board member of the United Astronomy Clubs of New Jersey; today he’s a member of four astronomical clubs in Indiana and three national associations: the Night Sky Network, the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, and the International Dark-sky Association.
We meet on the third Thursday of each month.
