See all- City WALK: the Van Ness 'Embassy Express' (D.C.)Van Ness-UDC Station, Washington, DC
This 3.7mile easy walk is paved with some benign inclines, but full of stairs! Pace: 2.5mph. The trek expeditiously tours the Uni. of the D.C. (UDC) then embraces enigmatic embassies in Van Ness, collectively known as the Int'l Chancery Center (ICC). After ambling through alleys the walk wanders by the Newton Apple Tree prior to descending a snaky staircase. Latter of the circuit encircles new & old Howard Uni. School of Law buildings, offering a vacuous vista of D.C. before concluding amongst terracing towers. Highlights include the UDC 'amphitheater ascent', an odd alley of eyes, & a grandiloquent grotto. Can you enumerate all the embassies?
NOTES:

This 5.6mile easy hike is relatively flat & sometimes paved. Pace: 3mph. The trek explores the small community of Sandy Spring, first departing from the Woodlawn Manor which is also headquarters for the Montgomery County Police horse stables. After a stream- side saunter the hike GINGERLY ganders in a Graveyard at the Sandy Spring Meeting House then traverses through town. Latter of the circuit proceeds through a corridor of trees, entering a nice neighborhood before taking a sneaky shortcut back to the trailhead. Highlights include colossal Champion Trees*, the somber (1745) Sandy Spring, & an orchestral conclusion from Spring Peepers. A historical & Horsey hike!
NOTES:
1. Trail Forecast= MAP | Trail shoes ok; muddy after rainfall. Expect traffic congestion if commuting south/ eastbound via Norwood Rd.

- Beautiful Rachel Carson/Northwest Branch 8-mile loopBurnt Mills West Park, Silver Spring, MD
Fabulous 8-mile natural trail loop starting at the Rachel Carson trail and crossing over bridge to return on the Northwest Branch trail of the Anacostia Watershed. (NOTE: This is Burnt Mills Park WEST by the dam.)
There are hills and at least one or two water crossings. If we’re lucky we may see some spring ephemerals, and even wildlife. I’ve seen hawks, eagles, herons, barred owls, horned owls, deer, snakes, turtles, ducks, skinks, toads, etc.
Pace will be a fairly brisk 2.5-3 mph when moving, so this is not a beginner hike.
We will hike straight through without major stops except to take a photo or a swig of water or ponder a view.
There are no bathrooms at the trail though across Colesville is Burnt Mills Shopping Center with Trader Joe’s and Starbuck’s. And there’s always the woods.
If parking lot is full, you can park across the street at Burnt Mills Park East and cross over at the light.
Hike will leave precisely at 9 am so please plan for traffic and parking time so you’re not left behind!
I’m limiting the hike to 10, as trails get narrow on RC side.
Wear good trail shoes, bring water, and your adventurous spirit!

Latter of the circuit spurs to the ruins of a lachrymose Lock (#51) House before paralleling the Potomac river, eventually viewing lustrous lily pads. The trek concludes with a BYO picnic for Lunch (tables, grills, & restrooms available). Highlights include a pocket park, a tiny trestle, & an apt aqueduct*. A historical hike!
