What we’re about
Welcome to Northern Hills Hiking. We are a friendly group who enjoy exploring the great outdoors together with good banter, camaraderie, socialising and sharing adventures. The group aims to be inclusive and generally there will be a choice of events in terms of setting, location, length and difficulty to suit all.
We meet for walking, hiking, hillwalking, trekking and the odd trip away. Mostly in Northumberland, Durham and Cumbria, but sometimes further afield too. The events are not restricted to the Hills. Some events will be in the mountains, some in forests or woods, some along the sea coast. Some walks will be flattish, some along a well-maintained path, some climbing a steep ascent up a massive peak.
The group works on the basis of being a group of friends who go out walking together. Event organisers all volunteer their time and effort in organising an event and look forward to sharing the experience with anyone from the group who cares to join them. It is worthwhile reading the event description provided by the event organiser to ensure your level of fitness is suitable before signing up for any particular event.
Walks do usually fill up, particularly in the warmer months, so if your plans do change, please edit your RSVP so that someone else can fill your place. If you are delayed or cannot make it on the day, event organisers will have provided information on how they can be contacted.
So please join us as we have some great adventures, increase our fitness, delight in beautiful views, fill our lungs with fresh air, grow solid friendships and recharge our minds!

See all- 6 Wainwrights: A Fusedale Round - 9.1 miles, 2,760ft ascent, moderate/hardSt Peter's Church - Martindale, Penrith
A beautiful walk in the Far Eastern Lake District Fells; an opportunity to bag Steel Knotts, Wether Hill, Loadpot Hill, Arthur's Pike, Bonscale Pike and Hallin Fell.
Fusedale is a valley near Howtown on the eastern shore of Ullswater. Starting the walk at Martindale Hause, near the church of St Peter, the steep climbing soon starts. Birkie Knott and Steel Knotts are soon climbed and the views over Ullswater and the valleys of Martindale open up. Following a wide grassy ridge south we pass over Brownthwaite Crag and Gowk Hill. Then there is another climb on a terraced path onto the Roman Road of High Street. Turning to the north Wether Hill and Loadpot Hill are an easy walk over grass- and moss-rich upland. Arthur's Pike is reached after an easy, if somewhat damp walk. After crossing the ravine of Swarth Beck, we climb to the peak of Bonscale Pike with its impressive towers. We will then descend, with a fantastic outlook, on steep grass slopes to Mellguards above Howtown. Skirting the edge of Ullswater, we make the 690ft ascent of Hallin Fell, for beautiful views of Ullswater, mountains and valleys, before descending back down to our carsThis walk requires a good level of fitness and appropriate clothing and footwear. Please bring plenty of food and drinks taking into account the expected duration of the walk.
I am going for a walk; you are welcome to join me on the basis that we are a group of friends.
