All Those Books You Wish You Read

We will be reading "Beowulf" this month. It's a bit of a change of pace from the more modern books we've been reading.

I recommend the Seamus Heaney translation, as it attempts to preserve some of the alliteration in the old English, and because it flows quite well in my opinion.

Everyone will have a chance to share their thoughts on the book at the start of the meeting, which will be followed by an open discussion. I'll have a few questions prepared to keep the conversation going, which I'll try to post in the comments a week before we meet (although I don't always send them out on time).

We will be reading three of Euripides plays–"Medea", "Hecabe", and "Electra" this month.

I suggest the "Medea and Other Plays" (Penguin Classics) Paperback – published August 30, 1963, as it has all the plays and very helpful notes.

We're reading two months of short plays in a row to make time for a longer book the next month, which I'd imagine people could be reading alongside the earlier months if desired.

We will be reading Victor Hugo's novel, "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" in honor of the recent re-opening of this beautiful cathedral after the fire five years ago.

Hugo's novel fueled separate preservation efforts in the 1800s.

Since this book is so long, we'll be discussing it in two parts. This is the first part.
