What we’re about
Welcome to the Pacific Photographic Society of San Diego. We are an active hands-on photography group for all levels of photographers and for photographic expertise from novice to expert.
Our emphasis is on photography in the field and in the studio, as well as photo finishing, education and networking.
We offer our members a wide range of photography related events including several monthly photo shoots at various locations, seminars, classes, educational shoots and networking opportunities with other photographers.
We welcome all photographers from beginner to professional and seek to provide an environment that is friendly, professional and enriching for all.
We actively seek the input of our members to ensure that the group provides the activities that are both beneficial and enjoyable to participating photographers.
Upcoming events (4+)
See all- Street Photography - Mission Beach & Pacific BeachJRDN Restaurant, San Diego, CA
Join us for a street photography event in Mission Beach & Pacific Beach. We'll meet at 10:00am in front of the JRDN Restaurant which is on Felspar Street facing the water, and we'll take the group photo. We'll plan to walk on the boardwalk from JRDN towards the Giant Dipper Rollercoaster. We'll come back either on the boardwalk, or explore some of the back streets if the light looks interesting. You're welcome to stop along the way and take a different route, or do the whole walk.

Photographing the homeless: art or exploitation? (summary: generally, don't do it)
Is street photography of children ever ok? (summary: it's complicated)What to Bring:
Bring your favorite street photography gear and good walking shoes, hat, sunglasses, etc. A fixed 35 or 50mm lens or a medium zoom would work well.Parking can be challenging, please plan accordingly. A number of paid parking lots are in the area, but I am usually lucky and find street parking which is free.

- Annual Macro Shoot: Rose & Desert Garden and San Diego Zoo Orchid HouseFleet Science Center, San Diego, CA
Join us for a fun and exciting weekday Photo Shoot in the beautiful month of April! The lighting, weather, and photo-ops should all be good, especially for macro photography.
We will meet at the fountain in front of the Fleet Science Center at 7:30a.m. and take the group photo. Then we will do macro photography at the Inez Grant Parker Rose Garden and the Balboa Park Desert Garden. At 8:45a.m. we will walk to the Zoo. We will enter the Zoo when it opens at 9:00a.m. sharp.
After entering the Zoo we will walk to the elevator next to the bridge and take it down. We will then walk up the Africa Rocks Trail and photograph Protea Flowers which are now in bloom. An example photo is on this announcement. We will then walk to the Zoo Orchid Exhibit which is open only once a month at 10:00a.m.

After the Orchid House, we can decide which exhibits to walk to around the Zoo.
As for lenses, you will get the best results with a macro lens, but a telephoto will also work. For the Rose Garden, Desert Garden, and Protea you can use a tripod and monopod. You will not be able to use a tripod in the Orchid House.
Please be on time! If you are late or lost, do not worry, you can call me Walter on my cell phone at 619-886-7893, and I will tell you where we are, but try not to be late.
Our route will be determined a few days before the shoot and be sent out to you. If anyone has any requests for animals they want to photograph, send me an email and I'll do my best to work it in.Some special notes (Please read this too):
If you RSVP YES, please show up, otherwise change your RSVP to NO.
Bring walking shoes, water, hats and sunscreen etc. or whatever you need. A long telephoto zoom is the best lens to bring. You can also pack your lunch if you like.
Correct etiquette for Zoo Passes: If you are a member of the Zoo and have a guest pass that can be used by a non-member, please indicate so when you RSVP. If you need a guest pass, please contact the person offering the guest pas via personal message. If your offered pass has been taken, please indicate so. By following this simple procedure we will avoid generating hundreds of emails. Thank you!
This generosity has helped quite a few people in our photo shoots in the past, as the current admission for non-members is now (gulp) $76.00. Thank you.
Members needing assistance or who have questions can ask me or any other Organizers present. We will be glad to help. There will also be other experienced photographers present willing to help out.
It should be another great day out. If you have any questions, suggestions or ideas you can email Walter by going to my member profile. If you get lost or separated from the group, call my cell phone, 619-886-7893. See you there!
Please Note: By submitting a YES RSVP you agree that PPS, Organizers and Event Hosts are not responsible for your safety, or for any injury or accident of your person or your property. You agree that you have read the instructions of the announcement and that you are able to participate in the event at your own risk.
