What we’re about
Philosophia Perennis is a book club reading classical texts of philosophy and literature. We focus on ancient Greek and Roman books. The group has been meeting every other week for over a decade. We read all texts in English translation. No background in classics, philosophy or literature is assumed. However, please do not be alarmed that most active members do have some background in these subjects (We're friendly! We don't bite!) The group meets in central San Francisco.
In the recent past we have read such books as:
Plato's Republic, Aristotle's Metaphysics, Aeschylus' Suppliant Maidens, Plato's Gorgias, Virgil's Aeneid, Theophrastus' Characters, Lucretius' On the Nature of Things, Plato's Phaedrus, Sophocles' Ajax, Euripides' Orestes, Demosthenes' On the Crown, Plutarch's Alcibiades, Plato's Timaeus, Plato's Critias
We usually pace ourselves at between 20-50 pages of text each two weeks. Our ideal format is a open-ended Great Books symposium.
