Come on out to Focal Point, 2nd Tuesdays for Queer Contra St Louis!
Time: 7-9pm
Come early for a Beginner Lesson at 6:30pm
Cost: $10 (pay at the door)
One of the most wholesome, friendly, and affirming things to do in St Louis! All dances taught, no partner or experience needed, live music, non-gendered prompting.
This week's theme is DJ Contra - and they encourage you to dress up for a good time in 'da club!
Expect some cardio from the dancing - consider bringing water and dressing in layers. They may request everyone wears a mask to help limit the spread of germs, as well.
What is Contra Dance? I googled it, cuz I hadn't ever heard of the term either ;) Contra Dance is a form of folk dancing made up of long lines of couples. It has mixed origins from English country dance, Scottish country dance, and French dance styles in the 17th century.
A contra dance event is a social dance that one can attend without a partner. The dancers form couples, and the couples form sets of two couples in long lines starting from the stage and going down the length of the dance hall. Throughout the course of a dance, couples progress up and down these lines, dancing with each other couple in the line. The dance is led by a caller who teaches the sequence of moves, called "figures," in the dance before the music starts.
Each dance is a little different, but not super complicated. Everyone is very nice, so if it's your first time, you'll be in good hands!
