What we’re about
We are a mixed social walking group based in South Manchester.
We are an established group with a large membership and we have additionally now become a Meetup group.
We offer walks every Sunday meeting either at Brooklands Metrolink Station car park M33 3SQ in Sale for car share or at the start of the walk. We also have midweek walks, Wednesday evening walks in summer, weekends away and a variety of social events.
New faces are always welcome. You may join us for up to 3 events before membership is required. You can however join SWAG at any time, without attending any walks or events first.
Membership costs just £8 per year.
Attendance at all events is at the individual's own risk. The group will not be held responsible for any accident, injury or loss occurring as a result of any group event or in connection with travel to such an event. When transport is shared, please remember to offer the driver a contribution towards petrol expenses.
You should ensure that you are properly equipped for walks: walking boots, waterproofs, rucksack, extra clothing, packed lunch and drinks are all essential. Participation on walks is at the discretion of the walk leader. Please check with the walk leader before bringing a dog.
Please treat event leaders with respect. If you want to join a walk please RSVP on Meetup to let the leader know, don't just turn up. Please remember ‘No showing’ prevents someone on the waiting list attending the event and the group is left waiting for you to arrive. Please therefore alter your RSVP if you cannot make an event.

The short walk on Sunday 27th October is an easy 6 miler (approx) that takes in lovely views across both the Entwistle and Wayoh reservoirs, meandering along the water’s edge, up into the hills, through some pretty, well-established woods, circling back under an impressive viaduct and along a well-trodden path to the start of the walk.

There are two small ascents of about 150 feet each. One near the start of the walk, then again near the end of the walk. The paths are generally good throughout, with two small sections of road walking halfway round, before/after the pub, and it is quite sludgy/muddy in about 3 places. There is some loose gravel in another small section of about 10 feet, but all doable. There are a few stray branches to be aware of in places too. No stiles.
Walking boots/shoes are highly recommended for this walk. Poles useful if you use them. Dress warm or bring additional clothing items in case the weather changes. We did notice a few midges whilst stopping for breaks on the reccy, so maybe use/bring repellents. Please also bring drinks and snacks/food to consume on the walk.
Walkers are asked to carry a note in their rucksacks, or in your possession, with your emergency contact name and telephone number, in the event that you become unwell or injured during the walk, and the walk leader requires assistance or advice.
Meet Time/Car Sharing/Parking
Meet at Brooklands at 09:50am for a 10am departure. The walk will start at 11am from the car park at Entwistle Reservoir Car Park, Batridge Rd, Bolton BL7 0LU. This will give people time to boot up and having a coffee before we start our walk. There is free parking, although it is likely to be very busy so car sharing would be useful, where possible. Toilets halfway (but plenty of woods throughout the route).
The journey is approx 21 miles and will take approx 35 mins, dependant on traffic.
Walk Info/Breaks
The walk should take about 4hrs, including breaks, so we should be back in the car park about 3pm. We pass the Strawbury Duck pub halfway through our walk and the landlord has kindly said we can use the toilets.Walk start 11am.
Coffee break planned about 12 noon.
Lunch approx 12:40pm.
Toilet stop approx 1:20pm.
Walk finish approx 3pm.Post Walk Food
If anyone would like to stay for a meal at the Strawbury Duck after the walk please let me know asap. I have made a provisional booking for 3:30pm. First come, first served. The pub will get booked out nearer the day, but we can amend numbers at present. It’s a very busy and popular pub, hence the early walk spec email.
The drive to the pub is about 13 mins/4miles on normal A/B roads, or a 3 mins/0.5mile journey on a very potholed, but doable, road. More info on the day.
