What we’re about
BLUF: Come meet new people, read good books (mostly sci-fi). Please read the book or be ready for spoilers. Make space, take space. We welcome diversity. :)
----------------------------------
Long version
We read literary fiction novels - mostly sci-fi, plus a bit of fantasy, dystopian, weird fiction, and good chewy pieces of literature. From the classic sci-fi writers, like Ursula K. LeGuin, to the modern pillars like NK Jemisin (or is she fantasy?). We throw in some dystopian (eg The Dog Stars, The Power) and fantasy (eg Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell) maybe a smattering of other interesting chewy fiction (e.g. The Ferrente novels, Psalm for the Wild Built, All the Light We Cannot See, Moonglow).
Rules for this book club adapted from bookclubs.com
- RSVP. Let your club (and especially the meeting host) know if you’ll be able to make it to the meeting, and be sure to update your RSVP if your availability changes.
- ARRIVE ON TIME. Please
- READ THE BOOK. If you haven’t finished the book but decide to attend the meetup anyway, be prepared to hear spoilers.
- COME PREPARED. Spend some time before the meeting thinking about the book. Bonus points for bringing discussion questions (check to see if there’s a book club discussion guide on the Bookclubs site, or check out this list of general book club discussion questions for any book)
- SPEAK UP. Contribute to the discussion! Book clubs work best when everyone participates.
- LISTEN TO OTHERS. Your fellow book club members want to hear your opinion — and they also want to hear everyone else’s. Please make space for others to talk.
- BE HONEST. Help make a richer reading experience through discussion - share what you really thought or felt about a book. Also: different opinions on books is part of what makes book clubs fun. And polarizing books are often the best books for book clubs.
- BE RESPECTFUL. You can disagree with someone: always do so respectfully. Ask questions. Avoid personal attacks. And keep an open mind.
- HAVE FUN! Yep.
