What we’re about
We are a social walking club based in Sheffield aimed at people in their 20s and 30s. The group has been around since July 2002 and has been growing steadily ever since – currently we have around 200 members! We are part of the Ramblers, Britain's largest walking charity.
We're always on the lookout for new members, so please book on to a walk or social, or come along to one of our monthly New Members' Nights.
More events and further information about the group is listed on our Web page: https://www.sheffieldwalkinggroup.org.uk/
Being a Ramblers affiliated group we encourage our participants to join the Ramblers Association. This allows you to attend our great weekends away and get other Ramblers benefits. It also helps support the great work that Ramblers do to keep the countryside open to all and to fight for the things that matter most to walkers. You can read more about the work done by Ramblers here.
We have walks of varying lengths every weekend in the Peak District or the South Yorkshire countryside.
We have an active Socials programme ranging from meals out and cinema trips to dancing and pool championships, not to mention a Easter Egg, Pub Hunt and a Christmas Party every year. There's something for everyone!
We organise weekends away to beautiful locations across the UK such as Snowdonia, the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales. They're a great opportunity to see some of the most picturesque parts of the country and take a break from work and the city for a very reasonable price.
We’re a Ramblers group run by volunteers who we rely on to keep it going. There are lots of ways to get involved, so if you’d like to lead a walk, organise a social or join the committee, we’d love to hear from you!

We’ll be walking through Plantation Forest northeast from the car park for the first 1.5km. We’ll be descending off the back of the hill and then turning southeast down the byway past the Parson House outdoor centre. We’ll continue along to the Fox House for a coffee stop, before doubling back on ourselves on the Sheffield country walk marked way for 1km. We’ll take the path heading northwest at the second road crossing back towards Stony Ridge Car Park.Public transport or car sharing options:
Emma and I can both drive so we can give lifts from Abbeydale Road and/or Asda Queens Road (S2). It seems very unlikely there’ll be more than 2 cars of people free on a Wednesday morning but it’s also possible to catch the 272 peak link to a 5-minute walk from the start. We’ll arrange lifts in the Meetup comments.Be prepared:

After that, it’s pretty much a straight line along fields towards High Bradfield. If we struggle for time, we can cut the route short and end at Middlewood, but the aim is to make it all the way to High Bradfield and catch a bus from there.

End time: 18:00
Start point: Edale Railway Station outside The Penny Pot Café, Station Approach, S33 7ZA
End point: The Old Hall Hotel, Market Place, Hope, S33 6RH
Distance (in miles): 16
Ascent (in meters): 877

Starting at Edale Station we will walk towards the village centre turning right to cross Grinds Brook towards Ollerton Farm continuing along the path to Nether Booth. Next we will follow Lady Booth Brook past YHA Edale Activity Centre and steeply ascend Kinder Scout. Next we will circumnavigate the Edale side of the Kinder plateau via Ringing Roger, Grindslow Knoll, Crowden Tower, Wool Packs, Kinder Low Trig Point, Edale Rocks, and Swine’s Back. We will then head to Brown Knoll, Toot Hill, Lord’s Seat, and along Rushup Edge. After dropping down and crossing the col we will climb Mam Tor and then traverse the Great Ridge to Hollins Cross. Next are the climbs of Back Tor and Loose Hill before descending into Hope to finish at the pub at The Old Hall Hotel for food & drink. This walk will be strenuous due to both the length and significant elevation gain. It will also be fast-paced requiring a good level of fitness. The terrain will include very steep climbs, continual ascents and descents throughout over rocky paths, as well as crossing fields and possible bogs. Much of the route will be along edges and ridgelines and hence exposed to potential windy conditions with a lower temperature than in the valley. Sturdy walking boots are recommended.
We advise that this is not suitable as a first walk with SWG without prior experience of walking long distances at speed over such terrain.
Public transport or car sharing options:
Outbound train departing Sheffield at 09:14 and arriving at Edale Railway Station at 09:46. Return train options depart Hope (Derbyshire) Railway Station at: 18:39 or 19:39, with a journey time of 27 minutes.Public transport is strongly encouraged for this walk due to the limited parking in Edale and Hope which fills up quickly on weekends. For those who prefer to drive, please try to car share and allow plenty of time to find a parking space.
Be prepared:
Please remember to dress appropriately for the time of year. A waterproof is always advised, as well as plenty of food and water. Please bring sun protection if required (sun hat, sunglasses, sun cream etc).
