We will visit the Falls of Hills Creek and sites along the Cherry River to scope out spring wildflowers, as well as look at Mon Forest areas along Forest Road 223 and nearby public lands. The latter area has been impacted by South Fork Coal Company's Rocky Run mine, so we may see some adverse impacts, as well as the amazing biodiversity of this high-elevation forest land. A wheelchair accessible path (1700 feet) to the upper falls viewing platform at Hills Creek is followed by climbing a number of steps (a 220-foot elevation change) to the lower falls. The rest of the day’s hike is very gentle and a includes both a driving tour and walking. There is no charge for the hike, but donations are welcome.
Bring: Water and a snack. Wear shoes appropriate for the varying tread and terrain. Flower identification guides will be useful, and we will have some on hand.
