- Explore the Food ForestNeeds location
The Sierra Club of Northeast Florida is collaborating with Moncrief Springs LLC. to bring you an outing that combines conservation and culture. This tour of the Food Forest owned and operated by James Hoskins a 3rd generation homesteader, will offer a way to understand how neighborhood preservation and environmental preservation are methods for urban farmers to improve resilience in their community and elevate the way of life for themselves and their neighbors.
Your guides will be Michelle Maule, local filmmaker, Northside Jax preservationist and SCNEF member Bill Snow, board member of SCNEF. Participants in this tour will get a full sensory experience in the food forest seeing, tasting, smelling, and touching the crops. This unique eco-adventure will include storytelling about the influences of Gullah Gechee culture on urban farmers like James. We'll also explore how culture and agriculture intersect among BIPOC communities in Jacksonville.

James Hoskins owns Therapeutic Landscaping LLC and is President of Place of Development Inc. His work as an herbalist and regenerative farmer teaches people about sustainability and food sovereignty. Workshops are held monthly at the food forest for youth and adults. James uses methods like permaculture and horticulture practices to teach people to grow their food and cultivate herbs and edible flowers for medicinal purposes.
