What we’re about
- sign-up for outings and complete the participant agreement in advance at https://www.riograndesierraclub.org/calendar/
- The Sierra Club is an active and fun environmental organization. Come join us for hikes, outings, art openings, talks by experts, volunteer opportunities, and great conversation about environmental issues! There are tons of ways to get involved with this group.
SAFE SPACE AGREEMENT
Outdoor Activities runs programs that insist on a safe space agreement between participants, leaders, volunteers, and staff. We want to support everyone in exploring, enjoying, and protecting these phenomenal spaces, and hateful and dangerous behavior will not be tolerated. We don’t want to deny participation in these outdoor programs and we will always say no to racism, sexism, ageism, homophobia, impairment, and disruption. This clearly outlines the expectations of those wishing to support the Sierra Club mission and values.
- If you’ve signed-up for an outing or event and begin to feel ill, please stay home and seek appropriate medical care.
- Participants are welcome to wear masks if it makes them comfortable.

SAT., APRIL 23rd "Fire and Water" 9:30am-4:00 pm
SIGN UP AT: www.riograndesierraclub.org/calendarWe'll be exploring the South Fork area of the Lincoln National Forest in the Smokey Bear Ranger District within the proximity of the South Fork Campground (closed) and the South Fork Trail #19 which is within the Little Bear Fire scar from 2012. We'll also look and discuss the Federal seasonal Public water system of the campground and its requirements of the EPA Federal Safe Drinking Water Act. Along Trail #19 we'll discuss the original Bonito pipeline history which is on the National Register of Historic Sites. We'll hike to the White Mountain Wilderness boundary which skirts the Rio Bonito along the way with several stream crossings.
We'll visit Bonito Lake via the abandoned West Lake Campground owned by the City of Alamogordo and currently managed by the New Mexico Game and Fish “OPEN GATE” Program. We'll be doing some short off trail hiking so sturdy boots and hiking poles are strongly recommended. This will be an all day event, so bring
lunch/snack/water and there are picnic tables (Restroom facilities might not be available/open) at the campground. Please dress accordingly to the weather.
Elevation is a moderate 250' with approximately 4.5 miles of hiking with several
stops as needed.
