What we’re about
SCPRO is a special activities section of the Sierra Club Virginia Chapter that organizes hikes and other events for the general public on behalf of the Sierra Club's Washington, DC chapter and the close-in groups of the Maryland and Virginia Chapters. See all- Paint Branch Trail (ODH Training Hike 2)Herbert Wells Ice Rink, College Park, MD
The venue for this week’s ODH training hike has been changed from Kent Island to Paint Branch Trail due to poor weather and ground conditions. (Whew!)
You can branch out on this hike using the paved Paint Branch Hiker/Biker Trail that follows the southern portion of Paint Branch, a tributary of NE Branch that flows into the Potomac River. This route through Prince George's County suburbs includes many points of interest: the world's oldest (established 1909) continuously operating airport, beautiful Lake Artemesia, the main campus of the University of Maryland, sensitive wetlands, and part of the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center.
Trivia: The first mile-high flight by a powered airplane, the first powered airplane flight with a female (piloted by Wilbur Wright!), and the first controlled helicopter flight all took place at College Park Airport.
For this out-and-back hike, you can walk at your own pace to about 4.5 miles for a total of 9 miles or turn around sooner if you want to do a shorter distance. Your finish time will depend on your walking speed, but it should not be later than about 12:30 pm.
NB: Be sure to check here before leaving for any late changes due to weather.
Maps: A two-page map of the route is posted in the photos section below. You can also use this Google Map to follow the route on your phone as you walk or load this GPX track into whatever navigation/trail app you use.
