What we’re about
We’re the St. Louis Urbanists, a grassroots advocacy group working to create safer and more effective infrastructure for pedestrians, bicycle users, transit riders, and even car drivers in the St. Louis region. Our movement aims to promote better urban design through education, organization, and engagement at every level.
We hope to create a community for like-minded individuals to hang out and discuss transportation, urban design, local politics, and other similar topics. You can join us at our online Discord server, where we share tactical wins, post resources, and discuss local issues.
Our main in-person meetups are on the 2nd Thursday of every month. These meetings are open to all. The first half of these meetings is formal discussion of our organization and project updates, and the second half is social.
In addition, we have a number of recurring meetups, such as Social Bike Rides, Urbanist Book Club, and Bus Bike Brunch. We're always coming up with new meetup ideas, and let us know if you have an idea of your own!

14 attendeesThe Great Grocery Cart Race!
Forest Park, 5595 Grand Drive, Saint Louis, MO, USWho will be the Fastest Grocery Runners Alive? Each team, armed with a simple granny cart or other carry-on, will brave the horrors of uneven sidewalks, slow crosswalks, and crazy car traffic. The first team to take their items to the finish line will be crowned the champions!
All levels of ability are welcome!
We will supply the carts and the money to buy the grocery items.
Snacks and prizes will also be provided. Why are we doing this?
- Going to a grocery store should not be dangerous or physically taxing. We are going to race safely through the streets and sidewalks of St. Louis to demonstrate what needs to change. Your experience and feedback at our event is crucial to fighting for a more equitable world.
The Process:
- Meet at Picnic Pavilion #7 in Forest Park. (Pavilions are unable to be reserved and are first-come first-serve; if there are any updates to the pavilion we will post in the comments of this meeting.) We will be there with a bunch of carts.
- The organizer will explain the rules for the race.
- We will divide everyone into teams with an even number of participants. (3-5 people.)
- Each team will pull out of a hat the specific cart they will get (some might not be carts at all!) and the items they are supposed to get.
- The race is on!! Everyone will go from the pavilion to the Richmond Center Schnucks to get the grocery items.
- And then on to the finish line!! The finish line will be back at Picnic Pavilion #7 in Forest Park. The organizer will be there to time each group, check to see that each group got all the items on the list, and award prizes.
- We will talk about our experiences-- what we saw, what could be better, what was dangerous.
- Afterwards we will have water, sandwiches, snacks, and drinks, and will hang out at the pavilion.
Each team will pick, out of a hat:
- The grocery items (some might be lighter than others)
- Their cart (they might not all be equal)
Rules:
- No wheels!! You can walk, you can run, but no bikes, buses, etc. If so, you are disqualified.
- You can use navigation technology to get around.
- You have to get all the grocery items on the list. If the store is out of the item, you must show a picture of the empty shelf where the item should be.
The Location:
- Forest Park Picnic Pavilion #7 (the big one with the fireplace, the 2nd-closest one to Skinker.)
- This is accessible from the #16 and #90 bus lines.
