What we’re about

NoVA Pancakes and Butter Volleyball is currently only accepting BB/A level players (see Skill Level Guide below). Due to safety concerns and quality of game issues, we are not accepting anymore beginners and/or B-level players.

NoVA Pancakes and Butter Volleyball is a Northern Virginia-based volleyball community. Our events include indoor and outdoor volleyball.

To be considered for membership (as of 26 Jun 2024 and see above):

  1. Must be an adult 18+.
  2. For the safety of our current members and to maximize game quality, BB+/A is the expected and preferred skill level. Must know at a minimum 2nd ball belongs to the setter. A-level players are expected to know and be able to play in 5-1, 6-2 volleyball formations.
  3. For safety and security purposes, you must provide a current solo self-photo of yourself in your member profile as well as a name with at least two letters in it to be considered for membership. No drawings, group photo, partially hidden faces, photos of pets, etc. will be accepted.
    4) Members must be able to provide their own transportation. Do not ask group members for a ride via the comments section or event chat!
  4. Have good standing and reputation in the Northern Virginia volleyball community.

You will be removed from the group if:

  1. Have not visited the NoVA Pancakes and Butter Volleyball Meetup Group website in over 6 months.
  2. Violate any of the Meetup Policy and Community Guidelines.
  3. You've overstated your volleyball skill or knowledge level.

Skill Level Guide (Indoor)
Since there are many different guidelines, implementations, definitions, and interpretations regarding volleyball skill levels, the following minimum is expected for in regards to this group:

B/beginner (B level example) - still learning basic volleyball rules and how to play, only plays middle back "up" defense, errors are frequent

BB (BB level example) better skills than B/beginner, stays in system more than 50% of the time, knows most volleyball rules, understands setter has "2nd ball", may play 5-1 offense, setters set outside hitters and may set middles, plays middle back "deep" perimeter defense, blocking may occur, errors are less frequent, may still play "reactively".

A (A level example) higher skill level and faster pace than BB, rarely plays out of system, demonstrates consistent overall volleyball skills and high athleticism, minimal errors, understands role of all volleyball positions and court movement, plays 5-1/6-2 formation, attacks are hard hit, comfortable playing with middle hitters, understands tempos and basic types of sets (i.e. "4", "quick", "pipe", etc.), setters perform basic types of sets consistently and can set to all positions, can attack from back row, "proactively" plays perimeter defense, blocking consistently

AA (AA level example) exceptional all around player, usually plays error-free, able to stay in system most of the time during faster play, understands volleyball strategy, attacks and serves are very hard hit, passes nearly perfect all times, performs combos, comfortable hitting back row attacks, setters set all types of sets error-free in most situations, typically has had high level organizational volleyball training and playing experience (e.g. travel club,high school varsity, college, etc.) , may have professional experience

Open/Pro (Open/Pro level example 1, Open/Pro example 2)- typically plays/ed volleyball for a living, has played and trained professionally, the best volleyball players
