What we’re about
This meetup advertises events in Surrey about history. It promotes meetings of its own and of local history groups, some online, some physical and some hybrid (both online and physical). During the Corona virus crisis we organised the Lockdown Lectures, a series of online talks delivered via Zoom.

See all- Talk: “Cast-iron Firebacks: More Interesting than you’d think”Crossways Community Baptist Church Dorking, Dorking
16th/17th century firebacks were not just functional, often containing information about the house and family owning it; the audience will learn of the detective work that is sometimes needed to unlock their secrets. Examples can be found in Guildford Museum, Clandon Park and Ham House.
Jeremy Hodgkinson will tell us as all about it. More on Paul at: Introducing - Jeremy Hodgkinson PDF.pdf£2 entrance fee for non-members
dlhg.org.uk - “Why is Dorking called Dorking?” by Robert BriggsLink visible for attendees
The linguistics behind our town’s name may sound a rather dry topic, but the most likely derivation of Dorking’s name illuminates the the archaeology and historic landscape of our area. Please come along and hear more from Robert, who has published a peer-reviewed paper on the subject
