A talk about one of William the Conqueror’s sidekicks who was given an Earldom and great lands – including a castle down the road in Reigate for his services in 1066 and beyond. And historian Sharon just happens to has written a book on the subject.

Robert Hooke and Thomas Tompion were both involved in the development of clocks and watches, and their work helped make English clockmakers leaders in the world.
Thomas Tompion produced over 5,000 clocks and watches, including some of the first watches with balance springs, and made the original clocks for the Royal Observatory at Greenwich. He died in 1713 and is buried in Westminster Abbey. Polymath Robert Hooke, a contemporary of Isaac Newton, is better known – but what’s the link between Hooke and Tompion?
