The Derbyshire Walkers

This beautiful varied walk goes through dense forest and woodland, along reservoirs, meadows, moorland and up steep summits.
The route starts at Tegg's Nose Country Park, it lies on the border of Cheshire and Derbyshire's Peak District. The park is situated in the old Macclesfield quarry, quarrying has taken place here since the sixteenth century up to 1955.
Some of the old machinery can still be seen lying around the area. The surrounding area consists of open heather moorland meadows and woodlands.
After exploring the woodland trails, the route continues onto Tegg's Nose, the summit is 380 metres at its highest point.
After a short but steepish climb, we reach the top with stunning views of the Cheshire plains, on a clear day, it's possible to see the Welsh hills and the Liverpool Cathedrals.
Leaving the summit, the route heads down to the four reservoirs which provide Macclesfield with drinking water and support an abundant population of waterfowl.
Tegg's Nose Reservoir was constructed in in 1871 and Bottom's Reservoir in 1850.
Trentabank Reservoir is home to rich uplands and grasslands and is surrounded by coniferous plantations. It's also home to 22 pairs of nesting Herons, the largest Heronry in Cheshire.
Leaving the peaceful surroundings of the reservoirs, the route heads into the dense forest and follows a path up to the steeper summit of Shutlingsloe.
Shutlingsloe is known locally as the Matterhorn of Cheshire, it's 506 metres high and the second highest in the county, a distinctive landmark throughout the east. The views are spectacular from the top, Cheshire to the west and the rolling hills of the Peak District National Park to the east.
The route rejoins the magnificent Macclesfield Forest path.
Macclesfield Forest was created by the Normans to hunt deer wild boar and wolves. Today it is home to a herd of red deer, badges, foxes and other small mammals. Conifer seeds provide a feast for many small birds, including tits, siskins and the beautiful red crossbills. The forest supports over 30 species of fungi, in spring the woodland has many bluebells and spring flowers.
These wondrous forest paths lead us eventually back to the Country Park.

A fairly challenging walk in parts, a couple of steepish climbs, but as always some pleasant paths through woodland and Reservoirs

Walking boots are essential, a walking pole is helpful for the steep bits

This walk visits pretty villages as well as through woodland pastures and moorland.
The route starts from the characterful Village of Cromford and heads up through woodland to the charming Village of Bonsall.
It's a historic former lead mining village set in steep sided limestone dales. There's an unusual 17th Century cross set on the top of stone circular steps in the sloping market square. The King's Head is a 17th Century Inn and the Barley Mow pub is a listed building.
Bonsall is said to be the centre of paranormal activity, including alleged sightings of UFOs..
Leaving this eccentric village, the route heads across fieldland and pastures to Jughole and Lea Woods.
The route continues to Snitterton Hall,
a Grade I listed Elizabethan Hall set in walled gardens and pasture land extending to approximately 7.4 acres.
At the time of the Domesday book, in 1086, Snitterton was part of the King’s Manor of Matlock.

The route joins the Limestone Way and brings us into the Upper Town of Bonsall.
After passing through the village, we join grassy tracks which take us through woodland high above the Via Gellia and dropping alongside a stream all the way back to Cromford where we started this beautiful walk.

This is a walk not to miss, varied terrain across wild moorland, through woodland hamlets and villages.

Our walk starts in the charming historic Village of Eyam pronounced 'eem'. Eyam, known as the Plague Village, became famous after the Black Death in 1665 - 1666. The Villagers cut themselves off from other villages to contain this deadly desease. Historic Buildings: 17th Century Eyam Hall, the church dates back to Saxon times, the oldest feature of the graveyard is the 8th Century Celtic Cross. There's a row of cottages known as the Plague Cottages.

The route leaves Eyam and heads up and across pastures to Sir William Hill Road.
The path continues across wild moorland, Big Moor Plantation and Gotherage Plantation with far-reaching views of the White and Dark Peak.
The path descends towards Abney Clough and steeply down to Stoke Ford crossing a footbridge over Highlow Brook.
This was the main packhorse route from Eyam to Bradwell also passing through Abney and Robin Hood's Cross.

It continues through a wooded valley to the tiny Village of Abney with its secluded cluster of cottages sheltered from the surrounding moors by woodland.

Leaving this secluded village, the route heads over pastures across Abney Moor to Great Hucklow Village.
This peaceful little village is set under Hucklow Edge in beautiful countryside, the road up through the village passes by some charming stone houses.
There is evidence of lead mining in the area around Great Hucklow dating back more than 700 years, Rake Lead Mine near Windmill contains a shaft more than 600 feet deep.
Many of the places around Great Hucklow contain the word 'low', as does Great Hucklow itself. This is in reference to an abundance of ancient burial grounds or tumuli to be found hereabouts. These 'lows' as they were named, were where early men from Neolithic times buried their dead on the tops of hills or mounds, as close to the 'heavens' as possible.

Our route leaves Great Hucklow and heads about a mile away to the Village of Foolow, a pretty village in the White Peak area of the Peak District with its country lanes and quaint limestone cottages.
The Village Green has a medieval cross and a picturesque duck pond complete with Aylesbury ducks. There is also an architecturally interesting Wesleyan chapel dating from 1836, and an ancient well enclosed on three sides by a stone wall, this upland village lies at 1,000 feet above sea-level.

The return path to Eyam goes across pastures to join the path into Eyam Town Head, finishing with a walk through the village back to the car park.

Our walk goes through open countryside woodland along waterside paths and visits pretty villages.
We start our walk from Carsington Waters, the area around Carsington reservoir is excellent for wildlife and bird watching. Nearby Carsington Pastures is a site of archeological interest.

Our route heads up to Carsington Village with its pretty cottages and gardens. This peaceful little limestone village, is just 2.5 miles from Wirksworth and has given its name to the nearby reservoir at Carsington Water.
The village was once a centre for lead mining and stayed virtually unchanged for centuries.

Our route leaves the village and heads across hilly pastures with a succession of hollows known as rakes, which marks the site of a disused mine.
Eventually the path descends into Brassington, set on a hilltop in the rocky uplands of the southern Peak District, it's an attractive old village with a timeless feel to it with old characterful houses and pretty cottages set amongst narrow streets. Surrounded by spectacular countryside, it was once a centre for land mining and there are still remnants around the area.

Our route continues and heads across fields to Carsington Waters Visitors Centre, a chance to sit and enjoy the peaceful views of the reservoir before we head over to our carpark about 30 minute walk away.
