What we’re about
Welcome to The Philosophical Wellness Club!
We are a group that enjoys living well and contemplating the big questions of life. Events and offerings that take insights and practices from philosophy, cognitive science, and the wellness sphere in order to have a positive effect on our lives. We tackle emotional health, personal goals, existential angst and more.
In terms of philosophy the emphasis is on the more applied or practical. The often neglected questions such as: What is the good life? What are the things that make life meaningful? Questions about the self, time, change, the nature of reality and human cognition.
As over-analytical types, we're also drawn to practices such as Meditation. Things that explore the nature of thought and different states of consciousness. I prefer to emphasize the more active and integrative versions, and so Mindfulness definitely comes into the picture here. This group also explores a novel mind-body technique called Insight Walking. A contemplative practice we use to go deep on major life topics. These practices both in turn have intriguing philosophical implications and so the interplay of philosophy and wellness!
Existence is the most intriguing thing I can imagine. However, this world pulls us in all kinds of directions and robs us of our time and attention. Let’s work together to live more deeply and experience how profound and meaningful life can be.
If you think this group might be for you please come out. We’d love to meet you. And no matter what, you are ensured to have fun, and meet some amazing people.
Many thanks,
-Julie

Ancient Brains in a Modern World
OnlineJoin us for a fascinating online event where we will explore how to find calm and focus in this age of overwhelm.
*Note: This event requires Registration Here.
There are many amazing things about the world we are living in. Medical advancements are accelerating every day. We can stay connected with loved ones all over the globe. We can learn anything we want right from our phones.
There are also downsides. Technology becomes more powerful and addictive every day. Our attention is now a commodity. We've become scrolling machines, lever pressers. We're socially anxious and preferring to transact with machines and date AI! Our commitments are distributed and attention fragmented.
Is our nervous system equipped to handle this? I worry we are losing touch with an important state of mind and way of being. That we are becoming too disconnected.
Let's get together and talk about what is happening and how this affects us.
I will present my personal top 3 mitigation strategies. There will be time for everyone to do some reflecting and generating of their own. And also an opportunity to share with the group.
It is possible to be well-balanced, and happy. To experience deep connection and meaning. But we have to get wise to our nature and our times.
This is sure to be an engaging and important discussion. Hope you will join us!
Zoom Link will be sent out prior to event. (Make sure to check your messages).

Our Burdensome Brains
OnlineI’m not saying it’s a bad thing to have a brain. In fact you might say it's a necessary feature. However, it's something that has the ability to torment us. You know, those times we are plagued with worry, obsessive ruminating, that non-stop internal commentary. We might even ask ‘is it possible to have this thing surgically removed?
From Buddhist psychology to theory behind Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. It has long been identified our tendency toward incessant negative thinking.
It's true - sometimes we are our own worst enemy.
This is a presentation and discussion about the ways in which the human mind is set up to cause distress. To make us suffer.
Although this part of our nature is necessary, it can become excessive. And so we will spend some time brainstorming ways to combat these tendencies.I will share my top 3 personal strategies and you will leave with a plan.
It is possible to gain some control of our 'monkey minds'. To cut through the noise and have more serenity. Let's learn about things that can help us breathe easy and not take our thoughts so seriously.
This is sure to be an engaging discussion with really interesting and thoughtful people.Hope you will come out. Looking forward to meeting you!

The Phenomenon of Creative Insight
OnlineJoin us for a presentation and discussion to explore the intriguing phenomenon of creative insight.
What is creative insight? This is when we experience the sudden rushing in of something brilliant. A new way of looking at something, a lightbulb moment. We've all experienced this important phenomenon and it feels like lightning striking.
What do we know about the phenomenon of creative insight? What conditions and behaviours are needed? What cognitive systems are involved?
Why is creative insight important? This is how we solve problems, get clarity, innovate. There are so many big problems we are facing. It's more important than ever that human ingenuity stays strong.
Is our personal capacity for creative insight getting diminished in this era of AI? Part of the recipe involves a period of effortful struggle. As we enjoy automatic generation of everything we want by external systems, are we deconditioning from some of what elicits this in ourselves?
In this session, I will share my favorite techniques to enhance my own capacity for creative insight. I will also share a funny story of what I used to do as a child to try and elicit my own machine level power.
What do you do to set yourself up for these breakthroughs? To increase your odds of those amazing a-ha moments.
Let's share and enjoy some lively discussion!
