These Boots are Made for Hiking...

SUMMARY
On this snowshoe hike in the Sierras, we will snowshoe about 3.5 miles with little elevation gain near and at the south shore of Loon Lake between Ice House Rd and the south shores of Loon Lake in the Crystal Basin Recreational Area, and El Dorado National Forest north of HWY 50.

MEETING TIMES AND PLACES
For carpooling, meet 7:30am at Iron Point Park & Ride next to light rail station in Folsom. Address for the park and ride is 150 Iron Point Rd, Folsom, CA 95630. Please pay carpool driver the current price of gas per gallon.

For those meeting at the trailhead, meet 9:30am at the Loon Lake Chalet. Free parking surrounding Loon Lake Chalet building, and a small turnout along Ice House Rd about 1 mile south of the Chalet. GPS coordinates for parking lot that surrounds the Loon Lake Chalet is 38.985138, -120.329586.

SNOWSHOE HIKE INFORMATION AND ESSENTIALS
SNOWSHOE HIKE LEVEL: Moderate.

DISTANCE: About 3.5 miles roundtrip.

ELEVATION: Mostly level terrain with some slopes, about 300 feet overall.

SNOWSHOE HIKE ROUTE: We will start the snowshoe hike from Ice House Rd, then snowshoe on part of the Camp Ground Trail, then turn left and trailblaze and parallel the Rubicon Trail to the south shore of Loon Lake . We will have lunch at the south shore of Loon Lake for about 20 minutes. After having lunch, we retrace back to Ice House Rd the same routes. Also, dogs are allowed and many trees have blue diamonds on thier trunks to help us stay on roads buried in snow.

SNOWSHOE HIKE ESSENTIALS: Bring snowshoes, ski poles, waterproof jecket and pants/gaiters, waterproof boots, warm clothing made out of wool or polypro (no cotton), sun protection gear (sunglasses, hat, etc), water, snacks/small lunch, electrolytes, first aid kit, plastic bags to put your trash in, cell phone for emergencies, and a map/compass if needed.

Start time is 8:30 am and we are typically done around 10:30 am.

Starting at the end of the parking lot, we go on the paved trails eastward to coyote pond, around the pond and back the same trail. The walk is at a decent pace, about 4.8 miles in about 1hr and 30 minutes. We usually take a small (10-15 minute) break by the pond. Elevation gain is about 141 feet (on the way to the pond).

Weekly Greenhaven Walk

Join us for a walk on Saturday through the beautiful Frank Seymour Park which stretches for miles! We’ll meet under the south end of the pedestrian overpass.

Parking: Free parking is available at 850 Florin Rd., Sacramento, CA 95831. I live 3 houses away from the meeting point.
