The Conversation (1974), a neo-noir mystery film directed by Francis Ford Coppola and starring Gene Hackman, John Cazale, Allen Garfield, Cindy Williams, Frederic Forrest, Harrison Ford, Teri Garr, and Robert Duvall. Hackman gives one of his greatest performances as Harry Caul, a San Francisco surveillance expert who may have listened in on a murder. This film, which Coppola directed between The Godfather (1972) and The Godfather II (1974) was nominated for numerous awards including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars and won the highest prize at the '74 Cannes Film Festival. Time Out calls this a “bleak and devastatingly brilliant film." I agree.
This showing is a new print and the 50th anniversary of the film. It's part of the Treasures from the Yale Film Archive series and is free and open to the public.
Please meet me at 6:40 in the lobby of Yale's Humanities Quadrangle (formerly known as the Hall of Graduate Studies) located at 320 York Street, New Haven (very close to Toad's Place). I will be wearing black and light pink sneakers and will hold the sign for our group. The film will be shown in the theater in the basement - room L02.
Note: These "Treasures from the Yale Film Archive" have no previews, no reserved seating and are consistently packed so please arrive promptly so we can sit together and get good seats. If you are running late or not going to be able to show up at the last minute, please let me know in the Comments section or Message me through Meetup.
There is metered street parking, but I'd suggest parking at the lot around the corner at 56 Broadway across the street from the Yale Bookstore and the Apple store.
