What we’re about
This Meetup group is run by the Veg Society of DC (VSDC), 7/19/22.
The Veg Society of DC hosts the events and pays the Meetup fee. You do not have to be a member of VSDC to participate in our events, but we encourage you to join. All of our events are vegan and we have a lot of fun! Membership enables you to enjoy members-only benefits like receiving discounts from our GreenRewards participating partners.
VSDC is a completely volunteer-run organization, with no paid staff. and is governed by an elected volunteer Board of Directors.
Founded in 1927, the Veg Society of the District of Columbia (VSDC) is the nation’s oldest continuously operating 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization promoting an all-plant diet and vegan lifestyle through education, community-building, and social activities throughout the DC metro area.
VSDC believes in treating all people, animals, and the planet with respect and kindness. We are committed to creating a more compassionate and caring world.
We do this by creating a community of like-minded people who are on the path to an all-plant diet and vegan lifestyle. Whoever you are, and wherever you are on this path, we offer resources and fellowship to support you. We make your journey easier, more enjoyable and meaningful.
VSDC. Creating communities for your health, the animals, and the planet.

See all- VSDC at Let's Beat Breast Cancer RallyLake Ann Plaza, Reston, VA
Join us at the Let’s Beat Breast Cancer Rally! This free and festive community gathering honoring Breast Cancer Awareness Month will bring together local experts, community advocates, and breast cancer survivors with the energy and music of community drum lines—a fun way to ensure the message of prevention is heard loud and clear!
The Rally will be held at the Lake Anne Plaza Farmer’s Market & Craft Fair so you can enjoy some shopping, too! VSDC will have an informational table, so please stop by and say hello! VSDC-ers who are willing are also invited to hold signs and pass out literature.
According to a recent 2024 survey, fewer than 3 in 10 women know that what they eat can reduce their risk of breast cancer. That is why it’s so important to “make some noise” and “beat the drum” for the four-pronged approach—eating plants, exercising, avoiding alcohol, and maintaining a healthy weight!
Be sure to visit and share the Let’s Beat Breast Cancer website to check out all the new campaign updates. When you sign up to join the campaign, you’ll get cancer-fighting tips, and have access to fun extras, including Dr. Funk’s Cancer-Kicking Buddha Bowl, the Getting-Started Guide, and our popular e-cookbook.
See you at the rally!

- VSDC at the National Animal Rights March in DCLafayette Square, Washington, DC
Please join Veg Society of DC (VSDC) members, friends, and many others in DC on Saturday, October 26, 2024, for the National Animal Rights March (NARM).
The NARM Purpose: While we dream of a world where all animals are free, we understand that change takes time. NARM always aims to advocate for total animal liberation. But to get there we believe that we must unify our community, reflect on the progress of our movement, and grow animal rights activism across the United States.
Time: Gather by 12:30 pm; event starts at 1 pm
Starting Location: Lafayette Square
Activity: We will gather, get energized, and then march for about an hour. There will be three short talks / speak-outs at the beginning and along the way.
Ending Location: Near the middle of the National Mall, close to the Smithsonian Metro station. Probably between 2:30 and 3 pm.
Post-March Activity (optional): VSDC will plan an activity (TBD) after the march so attendees will have an opportunity to interact more in a low-key way and eat together.**The basic details are finalized. Any additional info will be posted here before the event.
More information:
The National Animal Rights March welcomes individuals from all backgrounds and beliefs who share our values of compassion and justice. While attendees from any country are welcome, we especially encourage activists from the United States to attend this march in our Nation’s Capital. To show our unity and passion for animal rights, we hope to represent every state across our list of attendees. Are you ready to harness the power of collective action and create a brighter future for animals?By participating in The National Animal Rights March, you will be part of a historic moment in the fight for animal liberation. Together, we will send a clear message to policymakers, industry, and the public that the time for change is now.

- VSDC Movie Watch Party, Discussion, and Vegan FoodFairfax, Fairfax, VA$10.00
Join VSDC for the animal rights/vegan-themed Movie Watch Party on Saturday, October 26, in Fairfax VA. Socializing beforehand and discussion about the movie afterwards is planned.
We have gotten permission to screen Rowdy Girl: The Story of a Texas Cattle Rancher Who Went Vegan, a 2023 film that is not yet available for streaming. Showcasing the inspiring work of Renee King-Sonnen, after a spiritual awakening, a former Texas cattle rancher leaves the cruel cycle of animal agriculture and transforms her husband’s beef operation into a sanctuary.
The VSDC member hosts’ home in Fairfax has a small home theater that can accommodate around 20 people. This regular event is a fun way to learn, discuss, and meet vegans and vegan-curious people (Thanks to Mindy Kursban and David Kwiatkowski for hosting!).
FEE: The $10 fee will cover the hosts' expenses for the event, including food, beverages, and other associated costs. If there are any proceeds beyond these costs, which we don't expect, they will go towards VSDC's work to fulfill its mission. In order to ensure the success of the evening and limit late cancellations, the fee is refundable until 5 days before the event.
FOOD: Hot main course or pizza, salad, fruit, and dessert. Everyone is also welcome to bring vegan food or beverages to share.
WHO: All VSDC and Meetup members are invited. Bringing a non-vegan friend is encouraged.
WHEN: Saturday, October 26, starting at 6:30 pm. We will begin watching the show around 7.
WHERE: The home is in Fairfax VA 22033, near Inova Fair Oaks Hospital. It is 8 miles from the closest metro at either Vienna or Reston (Uber or Lyft would be necessary). For safety and security reasons, the exact location will be emailed privately via Meetup about 2 days in advance to those who have rsvp'd Yes. Please make sure your email is current in Meetup, your Meetup settings allow organizer messages, and check your spam if you don't receive the message.
PARKING: There is plenty of free parking within a 3-minute walk of the home.
*You must register via this page to attend the event.* A Pay Pal account is required to pay the $10. Because there is a cost for the event, Meetup doesn't have a waitlist for the movie. If it is full and you are interested in attending, please contact the host.

- Vegan Trunk-or-Treat with VSDC Children's PlaygroupBrewing Good Coffee Company, Savage, MD
Let's celebrate vegan Halloween together! Wear your costumes and join us at the 3rd annual Vegan Trunk-or-Treat event hosted by Brewing Good Coffee Company, an amazing all-vegan shop in Savage, MD. The event takes place in the nearest parking lot and features a handful of decorated cars distributing only vegan candy (and some with allergy-friendly treats as well!).
This is an outdoor event. We will meet at the blue decorated van with a VSDC sign where Playgroup Coordinator, Jen, will be dressed as a butterfly. We will be there between 12pm - 2pm so feel free to stop by anytime during that timeframe and feel free to come and go. The kids will have fun collecting vegan goodies and getting to know each other!
Brewing Good sells delicious vegan baked goods as well as breakfast/lunch options, although lines will likely be long. We will supply light vegan snacks for our group, but you may also wish to bring snacks or lunch for your kid(s), as well as folding chairs or blankets to sit on.
For event details, click here and for general location details, visit Brewing Good's website here.
While the event and the VSDC Children's Playgroup is all-vegan, our meetup welcomes veg (or veg-curious) kids under the age of 10 to be accompanied by at least one parent or caregiver.
The long-term vision for this playgroup is to build community for veg kids to help instill more confidence in their lifestyle choices and provide a strong sense of belonging while also having fun! Additionally, we seek to provide support for parents/caretakers by sharing helpful tips, resources, and inspiration for vegan families.
