What we’re about
This is a group of folks of all levels who enjoy getting out, exploring, and photographing the great nature around us by visiting local parks in Virginia, Washington, DC, and Maryland around the I495 Beltway. We are planning to provide ways to get together to learn digital photography techniques and do some portrait and street photography. There is a Facebook Group at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/286732975305378
I wrote the Virginia Beltway Photography Meetup Group Guide Book which lists 25 locations that the group has visited. There is an Info to Know section with links for directions and information about the location, plus photographs I have taken at the locations. Here is the link to the paperback book and Kindle version: https://cutt.ly/VBPMGB_Amazon The website for the Guide Book is https://cutt.ly/VBPMGB and has an Update and Errata document that lists the changes in the Guide Book since it was first published.

See all- Photograph the Colors of Fountainhead Regional ParkFountainhead Regional Park, Fairfax station, VA
Description:
- Virginia Arboretum Ginko Tree meetup moved to next Sunday!
Instead, let's capture the fall colors over the Occoquan Reservoir! Last time we went, there was a nice fog over the water. Combined with beautiful soft morning light, you can capture surreal images.
Look at the photos we took in 2022.
Notes from Rob Trek:
- I added some photos I took on October 15, 2022, so you can see the colors possible.
- There are a few routes you can take down to the water. The easiest is to park near the marina and walk down to the pier.
- There is also "Bull Run Occoquan Trail" that goes past an old cemetery down to the water. There are some really amazing trees down there. It is a bit steep, so maybe bring a walking stick.
- As for lenses, any wide-angle lens will do. Also, bring a short telephoto to capture trees across the river. You may want to bring a long telephoto for wildlife too. Deer, foxes, and other critters are regularly seen there.
- A polarizer will also help bring out the colors and reduce glare.
- We will meet in the parking lot next to the Bull Run Occoquan Trail exactly as pinned on the map.
Cost: Free
What to Bring:
Bring comfortable walking shoes you do not mind getting dirty. There may be wet leaves or mud. If you bring waterproof boots you may be able to venture out into shallow water for different perspectives. I recommend bringing any of the following: a Tripod, ND filter, a macro lens (or adapter), wide angle lens, polarizer, and remote shutter release (cable, app, remote control, etc.). If all you have is a smartphone or point-and-shoot, you will still have a great time. Ultimately, it's the talent you bring that creates the best shots.Photographic Opportunities:
I anticipate that you will be able to shoot red, yellow, green, orange, and other colors as the trees and plants transition to their dormant states. There will be shallow water running over rocks. Even a light rain or cloudy morning will offer the chance for wonderful images. There may be some birds around."By sending in an RSVP and joining this meetup event hosted by the Virginia Beltway Photography Meetup, I agree to abide by the rules and regulations (where applicable) of the event location and I am also agreeing to the terms of the following release and waiver of liability, which shall be binding on my heirs, executors, administrators, successors, and assigns.
