What we’re about
Founded by legendary conservationist John Muir in 1892, the Sierra Club is now the nation's largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization -- with more than two million members and supporters. Our successes range from protecting millions of acres of wilderness to helping pass the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and Endangered Species Act. More recently, we've made history by leading the charge to move away from the dirty fossil fuels that cause climate disruption and toward a clean energy economy.
The Volusia Flagler Sierra Club provides opportunities for local environmentally aware people to meet, engage in fun outdoor activities, learn more about our local environment through field trips and meetings, and become a vital part of environmental activism in Volusia and Flagler Counties. We live in an amazing area with springs, beaches, forests, and wildlife, all of which is fragile and requires our action to preserve. Please join us to find like minds, learn about the local area, and help us preserve the beauty of our special part of Florida.

See all- Paddle Alexander Spring Creek in Ocala National Forest.Alexander Springs, Alexander Springs, FL
Well, it's about time to get the operation in gear again. We'll be paddling Alexander Spring Creek (about 20 minutes west of Astor) which is a lovely 3+ hour lazy water, round trip paddle in Ocala National Forest.
There are a series of jungle-like islands along much of the creek. We will be navigating through patches of aquatic vegetation, so this is best suited to strong intermediate paddlers as some effort will be involved from time to time. This is the very first Florida waterway I ever explored with my grandfather way back in 1967.
DO NOT GO INTO THE GATED ENTRANCE TO ALEXANDER SPRINGS.
We'll meet at 8:30 am (launch 9 am) at a launch area at the far end of the bridge where S.R. 445 crosses Alexander Spring Creek. DON"T go to Alexander Spring Park, DON'T go in the park.....follow directions below. This will be a 3+ hour two-way paddle. There will be some weeds, a few branches, a fallen tree or two we may need to scooch over and some exploring. It's an adventure!!
There are no restrooms at this launch location.
This event is for intermediate paddlers. Intermediate paddlers will usually have their own kayak and gear. They are comfortable paddling 10 to 15 miles. They are capable of paddling against moderate currents in
streams and rivers and lake crossings with light to moderate waves. They are capable of self-rescue and assisting in water rescues.REGISTERING FOR THIS EVENT ONLY ON MEETUP IS NOT ENOUGH:
