Disclaimer: We know that this movie is problematic. We’re holding this screening on October 13th, which falls on Canadian Thanksgiving and Indigenous Peoples Day - a day that invites reflection on colonial history and Indigenous representation. While Pocahontas is a film cherished by many, it’s also widely recognized as deeply problematic in how it portrays Indigenous peoples and historical events. And that’s exactly why we’re watching it.
Join us for a group screening of Pocahontas, Disney’s beautifully animated and musically iconic film that many of us remember from childhood. Set during the early days of European colonization, the film follows the relationship between Pocahontas, a Powhatan woman, and English settler John Smith - weaving themes of nature, cultural difference, and connection across boundaries.
After the film, stick around for a thoughtful group discussion where we’ll unpack its legacy;- what it gets wrong, what messages it sends, and how it has shaped public understanding of history and identity. This is an opportunity to engage critically, respectfully, and together.
Bring your favorite snack or drink, and join us for an evening of nostalgia, conversation, and looking beneath the surface.
